it says no. 17 is a knob and capacitor, but from the wiring it looks like the volume pot is going straight to the .022 capacitor on the tone pot and back to the volume pot for numerous connections so i cant tell if there is seperate capacitor in there somehow connected to the volume pot or not?

anyway thanks pirate on helping me understand what the series/parallel stuff is about.

If that diagram is an all conclusive schematic than the one and only cap on there must be the "special one." The thing that doesn't look right to me is that it appears to be wired right on to the tone knob (T1), so how would the special cap be engaged when that tone knob wasn't being used. For example in positions 3 and 4?

I'm just thinking out loud here. Hopefully we are getting closer to an understanding of the special capacitor.

well i still dont buy that theres only one capacitor in there but i havent taken my pickgaurd off yet so who knows? if there is, then i think there doing by looping from the 5-way selector through both tone pots thereby going through the .022 cap and back into the 5-way selector.. what i dont understand is there is no wire going from the vol pot to the first tone pot like a normal strat. this thing is so confusing and its hard to figure out without a real schematic.

the actual S1 switch works by three wipers on the bottom of it.

The consensus of that post is that the cap in the schematic on T1 is there to prevent high end roll off. Cool. That makes sense to me. I will post back if I receive an email back from Fender about it.

anyone here change their pickups in a strat with an S-1 switch?

I have a new Strat HSS with 2 tex-mex and 1 diamondback humbucker (all stock). I changed out the 2 tex-mex with 2 texas specials. sounds great but a little tinny in switch position 2 with S-1 switch in or out. Does anyone have any experience changing pickups on an HSS with S-1 switch? Anything I need to look out for? My next move is to replace the humbucker with a Fender/Seymour Duncaon pearly gates plus. Any comments?

Thanks,
-Craig

I changed my mind about my S-1 switch. I was playing in the middle position with the switch on so it was using all three pickups plus something else and I really liked it. I was playing clean but still couldn't find a suitable overdrive tone I like better than just using my bridge pickup and the overdrive channel on my amp.

I still don't understand the specials capacitors, series connection and parallel connection though.

I found a good page on guitarnuts.com that helps out with the technical aspect of parallel vs. serial but I'll sum up what I learned as well.

Basically it seems that the Special Capacitor is there as a means to create different tonal voices when using the pups in serial (S-1 engaged). In particular acting as a high pass filter that lets high freqs go thru and stops some of the low freqs. The only difference between pos 1 and 2 is that the special cap is in parallel with the neck pup in pos 2. The same goes for pos 4 and 5 with the bridge pup.

So, the best way to figure out the aural part what it's doing is to just listen closely to the differences between those two positions.

Here's the link to the site: http://www.guitarnuts.com/wiring/serpar.php
