I would like to hear about what types of tones and uses you guys are finding with the S-1 switching. For instance I love using the bridge position with the S-1 on thru the dirty channel on my Mesa Lone Star for a gritty classic breakup sound.

What are some of the things you guys are using it for?

The S-1 switch on my American Deluxe HSS Strat helps me get some really great sounds with auto wah, flanger, and phasing effects. Even plugged strait into the amp it allows sonic textures that one would be hard put to find otherwise.
The only down side is that it can be sometimes confusing under the pressure of live performance when compared to traditional Strat controls.

Nice Pic.

I have an American Deluxe V-neck that looks just like yours, and a Deluxe Reverb RI amp, but would love to be able to get one of those Lone Star Classics.

As far as the S-1 switch on, I like the one you mentioned at the bridge.

Also, with a little gain and the treble rolled down at the neck position gives a nice BB King sound.

In that same neck position, makes for a nice clean-ish jazzy tone.

Thanks for the compliments on my rig. It's great to hear some other peoples ideas on the S-1.

I also get a lot of cool tones by tweaking around the tone knob while using the neck position through my clean channel.

And, Sunny Boy, it's definitely can be a bit confusing since we're all so used to the conventional Strat pup selector positions. You inspired my to dig out the functional diagram and refresh my memory on what is going on in each position.

speaking of that pirate, do you guys ever try to remember the series and parallel variations or just the pickup configurations of the S1? or do you even know the difference? i read somewhere that one is stronger than the other but all that is way over my head... :?

I kinda just turn it on and search for a tone I like... but there are some pretty distinct sounds to certain combos that have higher output, if thats what you mean by "stronger."

Here is a diagram of the S-1 switching on an American Deluxe V: http://www.fender.com/support/diagrams/pdf_temp1/stratocaster/0101302A/SD0101302APg4.pdf

yeah all those pluses and /'s mean the pickups run series or parallel. is this the same as inphase and out of phase?

There is a legend at the bottom left of the page.
    + = Series
    / = Parallel
Seems like while I have the "S-1" button pushed, I favor the "two pickups in series" of positions 1 and 5.

I guess I do both, as in remembering the series and parallel configs, but also in the heat of the moment I'll just grab a tone that's right.

The series selections sound "stronger" because more voltage is reaching the amp. I would like to know what Fender's "special capacitor" does in the circuit. Anybody know? When in positions 1 or 5 the special capacitor is not being used but in positions 2 and 4 it's in parallel with one of the pups.

I would imagine that it is keeping some element of tone from rolling off but that's just a guess.

I'm an electronics technician in the Navy, so I have some experience with this kind of stuff.

I'd also like to know what this means.

I just sent an email to Fender Consumer Relations and asked them for a technical description. I don't know if they'll reply with an answer, but I'll post it if they do.

Perhaps you guys can decipher these:
Looks like Part (21) is mentioned as a "Capacitor."
