I have a '98 Eric Clapton signature "Blackie" with stock lace sensor pickups. It's the only Strat I've ever owned and I haven't done a lot of side by side comparisons, but I'm somewhat concerned about changes in performance due to battery wearout so I'm considering changing to passive pickups. Opinions? Is my concern about active pickups unfounded? Thanks for your comments and recommendations.

Im pretty sure the lace sensor pickups are passive. The battery should be for the clapton midboost circuit.

OK, does anyone have or know of a Strat model with Lace sensor pickups that does not also have the active boost circuit? I'd like to get that circuit out of the signal path.

Lace Sensors are Passive! The EC Strat has an active boost circuit with a 9 volt battery connected to the Gold Lace Sensors, which boosts and shaped the output. Fender used Lace Sensors on their Plus line from 1987-1998, on Teles, Strats and even some Bass guitars, all passive. To see more about them look at my website:

Xhefri,

Thanks very much. Your website is very informative. You noted that "Gold Lace were the pickups of choice for years" - is that no longer true? If so, why have they fallen out of favor - is it mis-perception (ie guys like me who are chasing "vintage tone" but don't really know what that is  )?

Fender used Lace pickup for over a decade, and then with the introduction of the new Fender Noiseless pickups, I think Fender moved into a direction that would not only introduce a new product (important in marketing strategy), but also would generate more profit to the company by selling their own pickups rather than pickups produced with the patent belonging to another company...That is my thoughts anyhow....

Just out of curiosity Xhefri, which do you prefer? Lace or Fender Noiseless? Personally, I love LS more than any other pup. I have not played a set of Noiseless that I liked.

Funny story, my birday was coming up and I told my wife I wanted a Red LS for my Jaguar, store clerk tried to make her buy Noiseless. She was like "Yeah he specifically said someone would try to sell me those and he hates them."

Lace Sensors for sure. The fender noiseless are too glassy / brittle sounding. i am using Green/Green/Purple Dually right now in my player guitar. The Greens are designed to voice a TX special and the Purplues are like P90s. this guitar has some really cool funk tone. guess my favorite still is Blue/Silver/Red Dually. I like the little fatter sound of the Blue in the neck for blues/jazz/funk/sanata stuff. The red dually with the mini-switch is like everything from a Tele to humbucker...

Lace sells the Emerald and the Purple both in single-coil and dually humbucker formats.

The Emerald/Purple single-coils came as an extremely versatile set featuring a special Silver Sensor in the middle position which is RWRP (reverse-wound/reverse polarity) for hum cancellation in positions 2 & 4.

Ooooooo  Now I'm thinking Purple/silver/purple in my 2001 Am Std Strat. I can't find the Strat-O-Sonic at a reasonable price so there's my solution. :D

You know what? I might take you up on that some day...I have only done pup changes on 3 guitars (4th one will be Saturday) but I have not done the TBX tone control like on the Strat Plus and I would want that again. I will browse your web site and contact you. Not sure when as my guitar budget is spent for this year. Money might become more scarce if my wife and I split up :(

Yeppers, work on that first....top priority. Have you ever heard of the series called "Love and Respect" by Dr Eggerich? Excellent material that really helped my wife and I. The DVDs are great as well as the book. http://www.loveandrespect.com/index.php

Jeff, can you really build any pickup combinations? I guess that you can also do that for bass guitars as well.

Have you also customized "real" American Deluxes with Lace Sensors? Because I've seen a plethora of American Deluxe Strats fitted with Lace pickups on many Websites.

Hi Chrome, Yes just about anything. I do not do this for a job, but as a hobby. It is a nice release from a hard day's work! Anyhow I can do anything from a Clapton boost, to Jimmy Page Les Paul, to these samples: http://xhefriguitars.com/page5.html and http://xhefriguitars.com/page15.html

i have Fender Precision bass I tossed some Gold Lace's into. Do not know how impressed I was by that!
