Pickups that are designed for metal are usually not good for Blues. This is just info that I've read on the Seymour Duncan website. Bill Lawrence website. Dimarzio website. Lollar, & so many other pickup manufacturers. The best way to shop for pickups: (I think anyway): is to search all of the pickup websites for descriptions. Check the prices on Music Store websites (Musician's Friend is one) and finally go to "You Tube" and put the name and model of the pickup that you want to hear and usually You Tube will have several videos demonstrating it. "Guitar Fetish" is a website that has many styles of pickups at lower prices. I hope some of this helps. Of course, you will never hear exactly what a particular pickup will sound like installed into your particular guitar with your particular amp. As far as amps are concerned, what a pickup will not do for your sound, your amp settings and finally, pedals, can modify the entire sound quite a bit. Good Luck!

I can only tell you about what I would use for Blues, Classic Rock and Jazz. I own and love the Lindey Fralin Blues Specials and Vintage Hots. With that said, Rio Grande Vintage Talls and Seymore's SSL series are great pickups. Lower budget greats would be Fender Texas, and Custom 69's, both of these are outstanding pickups.

Kinman Pickup have a great reputation. They are a little high priced. They have audio demos of all of their models. They are a noiseless & very Strat sounding pickup.

Hello and Welcome!

My preferance for a good all round pup would be a set of Lace Sensors (red, silver and blue). There are as noiseless as pickups get, well designed and manufactured. They are also reasonably priced. To my ears they have a very contemporary tone.

I'd recommend trying out a set before you spend any money as they are, not to everyone's taste. You'll either lov'em or hate um!

Bridge – Red Lace Sensor - Resistance: 14.5k. Great for your Metal, Hard Rock duties etc. Loads of mid range power.

Middle – Silver Lace Sensor - Resistance: 7.1k. Good for funk and blues. Quite full sounding for a middle pup, very usable

Neck – Blue Lace Sensor - Resistance: 12.8k. Really nice deep soulful tone for blues. Quite close to a P90. Roll off the tone to get your jazz tone (though can be a bit bassy)

Use these pups in conjunction with a decent EQ pedal or active wiring (on-board pre-amp etc) and your in business! Everything covered!

The above is based on my experiences. Yours and others may vary.

Hope this helps

Andy

I agree with you. I became aware of Lace when I bought a Strat Plus Ultra. It had the red, silver, & blue Lace pups. I didn't know what to expect when jamming with friends. Lace has a Fender Strat sound and are quiet. I later picked up a Tele Plus with double red @ bridge & blue single @ neck. A mini toggle selects either single red or run them both. The red dually sounds hot and thick. The blue lace sensor @ the neck is great for blues.

It would be very hard to find a pup that you could play metal on and the other genres also.Pickups suited for metal are usually much higher output and don't go wel with blues or rock etc.I find that the plain old Tex-Mex pups give me great response and tone for blues and all types of rock.If you wanted to play metal maybe a good metal specific distortion unit would do the job with your regular pups.

You are right about that. Blues and Metal need different pickups. I mean, pickups can be versatile, but metal pickups would be horrible for anything sweet or mellow.

If you go with noisless, you could probably get away with the high gain that Metal requires.
Don't attack me, but to my ear the particular pickup becomes less important with a Metal tone (high gain scooped mids) as long as you have a box and/or amp that can push the gain up to that level.

I like the Dimarzio "Area" pickups for something that is noisless but sounds like a single-coil. The Heavy Blues 2 is a great bridge pickup for blues and rock.

Pickups are such a huge part of an electric guitar. Some players are so very good that they can make any guitar get the message across. I have a friend who's group has lots of CD's, but they never hit the big time. They did play on the same bill as The Doobie Brothers some years back of course. He said that Jeff "Skunk" Baxter would purposely buy a junker electric @ a pawnshop and put new strings on it and play it on several songs during their performances. This was before Danelectro's were being reissued. I imagine that he was finding guitars from Japan & Italy etc. He "wanted something that would sound different" my friend said.
