I have a few questions about vintage guitars and could use some Guidelines, I understand that the answers to these questions may vary largely from guitar to guitar, but general percentages and comments would be most helpful.

How much does a refinish decrease a guitars value?
How much do repairs decrease a guitars value?
How much do non original parts, specifically just tuners, or just pickups, or non original case, how much would each of those individually decrease value?
Since checking is common in older guitars, does that decrease value?

Is the blue book of guitars any good? Is there a better book out there? Is there a better book for vintage instruments?

Thanks, could really use the info. If you could be as specific as possible that would be amazing! Thank you. Jdwright6@gmail.com if you want to email.

I just got the 2008 Vintage Guitar price guide and it is worthwhile. It has a lot of the info that you are looking for.
Vintage guitars are very price sensitive to changes/repairs. Only have a qualified repairman work on your vintage axe. If it is of recent vintage, go ahead and modify away, with little fear of lost value. Always keep original parts, as the next owner of the guitar may want to re-install them.

There are no set rules for those things. It's not like a refinish is a price decrease of 15% across the board. A refin would mean nothing on a mexi-strat but it would probably take thousands off an original 57. So much depends on the value, rarity, popularity of the guitar you're talking about. You can't say a ding on the lower bout is the same value on all guitars. You really need an appraisal or the bluebook at the least.

No one here can honestly answer those questions without seeing the instrument in question and doing a bit of research themselves.

How much does a refinish decrease a guitars value?
-----------Depends on who does it and how good the job is. Might be better off to leave it alone.

How much do repairs decrease a guitars value?
-----------Depends on who does it and how good the job is (use authentic parts)

How much do non original parts, specifically just tuners, or just pickups, or non original case, how much would each of those individually decrease value?
-----------Just remember to keep the original parts, even if their broke, and don't modify the guitar for the new parts.

Since checking is common in older guitars, does that decrease value?
-----------Refer to second sentence in the answer for question 1.

In general, anything that has been modified will affect the price of a "vintage" instrument.

A refinish will decrease value
Non original tuners or electronics will decrease value. That is unless you get correct year NOS parts or used parts from a vintage parts shop and some people are persnicity about THAT too.
Extra routing or holes drilled in a body are BAAAAAAD
Normal aging and finish checking are to be expected and are okay

Overall condition of course affects things too. The better it looks, the more it's worth. Left in the case under the bed for 40 years and never played is BEST! :)

A lot of it is subjective too. I might find a guitar worth buying and you might not and vice versa. For example, I wouln't buy a refinished guitar.
