Hi All,

I am new to this forum looking forward to being a part of this community

I recently just upgraded my guitar, I had a squire strat, and finally went out and got myself a Fender American Standard USA made strat, I love the guitar.

Just wanted to find out what strings most of you guys use, I play 10-46 gauge. I tried the D'addarios I didnt like them much, they corroded in like 2 weeks. The ernie ball for me sound too tinny, and they are a real can I say slinky string, like playing with spaghetti. I was using GHS Boomers which sound great tone wise, but they mess your fingers up or at least mine pretty bad.

The surprise for me was the Fender Super Bullets too me these sounded good, felt nice, and most importantly stayed in tune better than any other string ive used. I notice that the Eb and D'addario went out of tune badly, but teh GHS were pretty good. But these bullets, I play 2 hours a night, most nights dont need to tune it at all, or if I do the next night only a slight adjustment is needed.

What do you guys think of the bullets, I was pleasantly surprised

Clarky

I like Slinkys Rock n Roll, pure nickel but they're hard to find in 11s. Right now I use DR pure nickel in 11 which are more readily available. I went through a few packs and so far I really like them.

I use D'Addario 9's but I just bought a pack of DR 9's and have yet to swap them out. I figure, for the cost, I'm going to try them all!

Ernie Ball regular .10s.... I do like Dean Markley as well. Great company too. I used to buy 10-packs and had about 5 sets where the .10 broke off at the ferrule. I emailed the company and told them what happened and I received a call from like the President of marketing. He asked if I could send him a sample of a broke string at the ferrule by priority mail. I did and a week later I received a box of 10 sets of strings for free!

I usually stick with Ernie Ball or GHS. IMO, GHS have more of a raw feel to them.

I tried Fender strings a few times, and I really liked them.

If you want longer string life, wipe them off after you play every day. That could be the issue with the string corrosion. My fingers tend to get very oily, and a good cleaning after I play is necessary.

Dunlop 65 string cleaner is great, one bottle lasts forever.

I guess I'm not very exotic in my string preference. I tried a bunch of them, including Cleartones and after a while came right back to Fender Bullets. I prefer the feel of the original Pure Nickle Bullet, but sometimes NPS Bullets due to availability.

BTW, Fender just brought producting of their strings back to the USA!

Oh, I forgot to mention, that when I talked with the vice-pres of marketing for Dean Markley, he told me there was only like 3 wire manufactures for guitar strings and that different companies buy them in bulk, cut and wrap it and then market it as their strings. I sure would like to know more about that. So it could be we are using strings from different companies, but it is the exact same wire!

I've used different sets throughout my guitar playing history, I used Dean Markley's Back in the early "80's liked them a lot but now I'm using these Ernie Ball Hybrid Slinky 9-11-16-26-36-46 & I Love 'em. The Ernie Ball sound kind of tinny when you first put them on, but play them for a couple of days and they sound great. If your fingers are getting tore up, Switch to a set of nines, They bend easier and they're easier on your fingers. The set I just described sound good for a heavy sound.Classic Rock, Not dropped tuned metal that is 8)

This is one aspect that is really overated. First off about 30 plus string brands are manufactured in the same company so that tells you something right there. I would be hard pressed for anyone to tell me without looking at the ball end what string was on a guitar and I use Daddarios just out of habit of saying the name for 10 years as before that it was Fenders. If it is a quality string that is all that matters.

I really don't care that much. Right now I have been using some sort of Fender strings that the store had on for 75% off. Same with picks, whatever there is around. Never been that picky.

I use Ernie Ball Slinky standard 9's or 10's depending on how often I'm playing out, nine's to warm up and break back into steady gigs. I've also used GHS they are a great company. I will say that the Ernie Balls have more of a broken in feel and feel great right out of the pack. You can't go wrong with either of these. Use the GHS string cleaner after playing/jamming at home, and change your strings before playing out no matter how often. And on a lighter note, use the gauge you can play, it's one thing to want to play heavier strings like SRV, but if you can't bend them to the note, what's the point. Tone is in your hands and heart, Clapton sounds like himself regardless of what he plays or uses in amps and guitars, just as John McEnrow can whip anyone unskilled at tennis with a badmitton raquet. And if your friend laughs at eights or nines, remind them of Jimmy Page and Beck, just to name a few who use them very well.

I like D'addario nickel wound 10's.

I just like them, they're what I'm used to having.

As I posted earlier, I was told by vice-pres of marketing for Dean Markley, he told me there was only like 3 wire manufactures for guitar strings and that different companies buy them in bulk, cut and wrap it and then market it as their strings

Here is what I found out: The Mapes Piano String Company sells guitar string wire to such companies as D'Addario, Fender, Peavey, Dean Markley, AHS, Ernie Ball, Gibson, DR, Black Diamond, Vinci and C. F. Martin & Co. So when you buy strings from any of these companies, you get the same wire, configured in their own special set arrangements; their own ball (ferrule) ends, and processing of the strings wire cutting; and then packaging. http://www.mapeswire.com/specialtywire.html

I am sure there are other wire companies out there selling wire for guitars, but this one is the biggest for steel string instruments.

I've used D'Addario 8-38s for years and found that they stayed fresh and new sounding longer than many others and stayed in tune after extreme bending or whammy use.I live literally right next to the Atlantic and even with our salty air had no problems with rusting,it's just a matter of wiping down your strings after use.
