I'm buying a strat but I don't know which to get.
1) American Hss deluxe w/ s1
2) American deluxe sss w/ s1
3) American standard strat

I play all sorts of stuff. Hendrix, stevie ray, dave gilmour, Van Halen, Zepplin. But I also play heavy stuff like TOOL. But this guitar doesn't necessarily have to be able to go too heavy cause I've got my fernendes monterey for that. Then there's the color issue- I really like the black strat but the deluxe's have the ugly montego gold/orange/crap color pickguard. I can't find replacement pickguards with the double hole on the humbucker. Also how hard is it to take off the volume knob when you're equipped with s1? -in cases I wanna switch colors on plastic parts.

thanks all

If I were you, I'd get the HSS Delux strat. I have a MIM one, and I absolutly love the tonal options with it, and if you get the delux HSS with s-1 switching, that will really be the only guitar you'll ever have to buy. For almost any style of music. Metal to blues. I really think that it's the best guitar in the world. In any case, it makes more sense than getting the SSS Delux, because it's the same guitar, only with more tonal options.

As to the color options, the Delux guitars come in more "regular" colors too (like black, white, gray, and sunburst etc...) and you can change the pickguard to get the look you like. As to how easy it is to take the knobs off, I'm not sure abou that. But I'd be willing to bet you can take them off with not too much work. But you might want to double check on that.

But whatever you get, you'll love it. Can't go wrong with Fender.

I had to order my pickguard from a non-fender company. There aren't many options that Fender has available.

Try this: http://www.guitarstop.com/acc/pickguards/fatstrat.htm
for the HSS pickguards with 2 holes on one side and 1 on the other. You can get white or black, or black pearl and drill you own holes. But you can get a non fender, like the guy says above.

This is were you can get the black, white, gray, and sunbursh colors for the delux guitars:

http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/ ... sku=511145

So if you like the color options for the guitar/replacement pickguards, than go for the delux HSS. If not, get an American standard or Am HSS.

But when looking for a new guitar, the bottom line is always:

PLAY THEM!

I'd go with an American standard anything. The deluxes just aren't organic enough as far as eguitars go. The American standards come in hss, but I have an sss trat style guitar, and I can get all sounds out of it. Humbuckers, ahh never played them, but I can get hum canceling on both of my guitars, and on my Mexican Nashville Power Tele I get very little noise even with the tone on full blast thru the bridge pickup on full gain. So the American Strats have to be as good if not better. But if it's the mumbucker sound you'r after, get an hss, or stick a blade humbucker on the bridge. Never played one of those either, but I hear they're good and I like how you can shove them right into your guitar without routing. But always remember, Fender's are easily modded and it's easy to reverse a mod too, so just do what your gut tells you to do and buy the guitar you want.

PLAY THEM PLAY THEM PLAY THEM!

And if your store doesn't have them, just buy one on the web, try it, if you don't like the sound, simply make sure you haven't messed with the goodies and return it. The eguitar world is chock full of options in the simples of forms! :D
