Hi everyone....I'm Dr Robert and new to this forum. Just wanted to kick off a post re mods on strats. This one is my first wife...i've had her for 20 years or so and figured she was ready for a revamp.
She's a mid 70's model and the pickguard was made by etching into aluminium.
Any comments..thoughts about this guitar are real welcome...particularly the plate as i'm in the process of starting a small business offering etched pickguards. PLEASE DON'T THINK THIS IS AN AD! I'M JUST LOOKING FOR FEEDBACK!http://markstheshark.blogspot.com/2010/04/strange-journey.html

Yeah Doctor Robert, the guitar repair guy from the magazine.

Mate theres people on these boards that worshipped your columns. It was the only reason I bought guitar mags for a long time.

Thats awesome!

I'd love to have one made for my strat.

Ton of questions though...
Are there any technical limitations as far as image resolution? (both examples seem low-res so I wondering if thats artisitc license, or that
a limitation on the process itself? Do you have further samples?

Cheers!

ORC

Hi Dr R, welcome to the Forum.

So you're not Robbie "Dr Robert" Gladwell then, is that right? If not I'd politely suggest finding a different moniker: Dr Robert means someone very specific to the guitar world, in our country at any rate.

Anyway: regarding etched pickguards. You don't know it but we were discussing this very thing just the other day. I've looked at your work: very interesting. That's some sort of photo transfer process, I presume? Care to tell us more about that?

And would you mind telling us which acid you are using to bite aluminium, please? Hydrochloric? Or does ferric chloride work on aluminium?

Assuming you are Mark Shark from Cornwall, as per that page you linked to, I wonder where you are sourcing either of those acids - or another? Are you buying ferric chloride crystals from T N Lawrence, by any strange chance...? (Or did they close their Redruth outlet, do I recall?)

Small world, ain't it?

Cheers - C

As much as I like the idea here. This smells like an ad to me.
