Compared to the American series they are mediocre at best...
I have 2 Americans and one Mexican.. I use the mex for travel...

I think in general Fenders Quality has slipped...

I really like the MIM Deluxe series like the Deluxe Players Strat. I have a Deluxe Powerhouse Strat with the 12 dB boost in Inca Silver with a pearloid pickguard.

I've got a noob question....having been away from guitar playing for some 30 years....I've decided to pick it back up again, I'm interested in a MIM Strat, and have been exploring EBAY for info. I see mid 1990's MIM Strats , supposedly excel. condition, being listed for $399 buy it now. Are these years desirable for some reason....as a new Stat sells for the same price? Is it a "Vintage" isssue? This particular one was stock, solid black...though admittedly ney looking. Maybe this person is just dreaming..

Hi Mike,

That e-Bay person you refer to IS dreaming. No, they are not desireable by any means.

Actually, the NEWER the MIM Strat, the better it is. In 2006, Fender revamped the line and made a ton of improvements even on their Standard models. Incidentally, one of these new ones cost apprx. $399 as well. Check them out, you'll be pleasantly surprised.

I had a hard time deciding between the Players and The Powerhouse. I went for Players Strat for the Extra Pick Up Selector. I still wonder if I made the right choice. I was looking at the Graffiti Yellow Powerhouse.

I had the same thoughts, too -- Should I have gone for the 7 different tones or go for the mid-boost.

I'm happy with my choice, but I might pick up the Dlx Players in the future . . . though I hear rumors of its demise.

I really like the Bridge/Neck pickup sound you can get with 7 choices. I wonder if it would be easier to put aMid Boost on a Players Strat, or a Pick up selector on a Powerhouse?

Either way, I hope they don't discontinue them  . For me, the switching on the Players Strat makes more sense than the S-Switching on the American Models.

In the late 90s, I bought a mexi-strat as my West Coast guitar when I was spending my work weeks in LA and weekends at home in the east. This is the sweetest-sounding and easiest-to-play guitar I own, perhaps because it was set up by a real artist at Carruther's Guitar Shop in Venice Beach, CA. It is also the least expensive (I have an ES135, an LP Studio, and a Carvin DC127).

This the only strat I've ever owned, so I can't judge it against other Strats.

But I'd like to know some of the specs on this guitar in case I ever wanted to try a higher priced Fender product. Couldn't find this info on the website, but can anyone tell me what the neck shape, neck radius, and fretwire specs for this guitar? According to the SN, it was made in 1996-1997.

I've owned and/or played a lot of strats over the last 30 years, from a 1954 to a '96 Lonestar strat. Both the USA and the Mexican strats are fine guitars. The USA strats are a bit better finished and the electronics are most likely better quality. I prefer the pre '06 Mexican strats because of the neck profile (chunky!) and the pickups (more '50s sounding). I did have to replace the output jack on my '04 and I had to tighten the jack on my bandmate's. EZ fix. I had a refinished '59 hardtail for 7 years (had to sell to finance birth of child. no regrets!) That was a great guitar, but i've enjoyed every strat I've ever owned. Try them both, see which you prefer..

I almost ended up purchasing a Mexican Strat but instead went with the Highway series American. The thing that clinched my decision was the neck (the American had a wider neck and jumbo frets) more than anything else.

But, I have to be honest about this: I'm not one of these guys who lovingly polishes his guitars every night. I pound 'em, I sweat on 'em, and I punish 'em. I think if I buy another Fender guitar (I already own 2, but hey, you never know) I think I'm going to go out of my way to buy either a Mexican, or (Heaven Forbid!) a Squire and just get the modifications out the way that I would normally get (pickups, jumbo frets)...

I don't use a tremolo bar so at the end of the day, I think I'm going to get a better deal by looking at the so-called "lower end" models, getting the modifications, and chances are pretty good I'll be happy with the end product.

EDIT: Here's the other thing to consider...let's say you go out and spend 2000 dollars or more on an instrument. After a while, you're going to question the wisdom of taking something like that into a dirty, grimy club or other place where it can get broken and/or stolen. It's all about having the work horse...

Viva La Mexico!

I like them. They may be made in Mexico, but that factory is very close to the California factory. Very easy to keep an eye on quality control. I own 2 American Strats and I have owned a Mexican Strat and a Mexican Tele. Nothing wrong with any of those guitars.
