Its a cheapo aliminium rule. I simply marked each side of every fret. Drilled a hole up inbetween the 2 marks with a 3mm drill bit, around 5mm up from the edge of the rule. Then I cut upto the hole with a hacksaw along each of the fret side marks.

Took 20 minutes to do the first, for fender scale. Took 5 minutes to do the 2nd for gibson scale.

Why? It makes no difference tonaly to anything except open strings and then its a miniscule difference. Their hard to cut and dont really offer any benefits as to stability. In plain english its a bugger to get a smooth slot on a bone nut.

The only reason I use em is cos I cut my own and bone is free.

Would that be human bone? I can just see you in a secret lab. hehe. seriously what kind of free bone do you use? I suppose you could use human bone if it was properly sourced, may get the spirit of the person coming through in your playing, now there is an idea. just imagine, frank zappa, jimi, django.....?

Nah cow bone, more particularly from the ankle end of the leg. Anything else just isnt dense enough.

I am considering trying one made from stone, purely for aesthetics.

Hi vaarl: so happens I can answer that. :D

Nick has probably moved on to other sources by now, but at one point he was using bone supplied by... me. I spend half my time in London and half in Devon. Here is one of the fields above our house down there:
Image

Those are organic pasture reared beasts, and they travel a couple of miles to the little local abattoir and then a couple more miles to the farm shop where the butcher gives me all the bones I want for nothing. Leg bone is the thing for guitar nuts.

Here's a bone I sent Nick:

Though I rendered it into this, first:

There is a debate over whether fresh bone like that makes the best nuts, or aged, weathered bone. I've sometimes used bone given me by my neighbour: they've been chewed and buried by her dog, aged in soil and sun and dog dribble. Sometimes I get home and find a little gift such as this waiting on my doorstep. Note the teeth marks:

That's country life for you!

Stick around a few days. I might have some handy pictures to show, far as making bone nuts is concerned...

Cheers - C

Interesting stuff and an organic process, although I am going to take your earlier advice and leave the hw1 nut on as it came. Since Niki is suggesting there is no real tone difference really then it seems pointless to tamper, unless his stone idea finds tonal justification.

No material yields any tonal difference whatsoever except for on open strings. The reason is as soon as you fret a note you cut short the strings talk length. Thats why I think your far better off with synthetic material.

I did indeed find a new source.
It wouldnt be fair for me to keep pestering Ceri for cow bone. Though those Peckham cows do certainly give a nice looking bit of bone.

Good grief man, I'd be absolutely delighted! I can supply mutton, venison and goat bone too, if it would be of interest? Fancy a sheep skull to work with...? :D

And back in Peckham (South London) there's all kinds of illegal bushmeat finding its way in from West Africa too. Would sir like a chimpanzee bone nut, perhaps? (I'm joking on that. I'm told such stuff really does exist - and I'm certainly not going looking for it...)

Bit of a melting pot, Peckham. I can offer kosher, halal... or probably Zen Buddhist too, for all I know. Though I dunno: maybe the Zen one would be a vegetarian nut...

Cheers - C

Now I wouldnt mind a goats skull to sit on the shoulder of my leather jacket and a matching one for the amp head.

Not sure the rest of the band would be too impressed though, never mind the goats.
