Looking at a mexican strat for 280 euros 2nd hand. Seller says its in perfect condition, like new.

for a 3 year old mex strat, supposedly in perfect condition. Price of a new mex strat in Ireland bricks and mortar store is about 550 euros give or take a few quid.

Dont need a new guitar but was gona use it as a base for modding, adding a humbucker and a few other small changes.

Buy it!

I've bought two Mexican Strats on eBay in the last year and they've been absolute belters, and I bought before I could play them. I live in Meath and I use this site a lot. This Strat looks solid enough and for €280 Euro, you're in Squier territory in terms of pricing for a superb guitar. Unlike eBay, you can actually play this Guitar before you commit to by so you have nothing to lose. Make the guy an offer and take it from there.

You won't regret it. :)

Well I say deal.

Looks alright to me and the price is right. They dont come along with a decent price every day. People seem to have forgotten that 2nd hand stuff should sell for 50% of new price.

its got the old style tuners, will i be able to easily upgrade them to locking tuners without having to bore, and without having ugly screw holes left over?

No you'll likely have to bore the holes out unless you want to hunt for a particular same sized set. Fender/schaller locking tuners wont fit.

I wouldnt change the tuners. I think stock tuners are equally as good. Performance is down to how you wind the string onto the tuner, not the tuner itself.
I find locking tuners to be just as bad as any other poorly wound tuner without many winds on em. There ok if you want a quick stringchange if you break one at a gig. Your far better off to just have a backup guitar in that case though.

Here's another opinion, I have a mim Strat and I put Sperzel locking tuners on it. They drop right in but I did have to drill one hole per tuner right in the middle of the two stock holes. Once the tuner is installed you can't see any unsightly holes, it looks fine.

I hated winding on new strings and now it's so easy. I'm very happy with my locking tuners. But to each their own :-)

Get that guitar.

Deal. You're getting an "as new" guitar for about half the retail value. What's not to like about a deal like that? 8)

I would not change a thing unless you find something to be problematic. Why spend money to fix something that is not in need of repair? :D

thing is i have a CV tele, and an AM Dlx strat, so im set for single coil guitars. i am in dire need of a humbucker, especially now that im trying to learn a bit of Van halen and the like.

So, if i get this, my plan is to get a 3 ply black/white/black pickguard with space for 1 humbucker, volume and tone and drop it in. total should come to less than 100 euros for new pickup and pickguard, so its still way cheaper than a new guitar.

once i hear back from the seller il let you guys know how i get on.
