Lotimus pretty much hit it out of the ball park for an answer......

OP if this is your only guitar...as you said, then the answer is don't do it.
For One...... your guitar will be disassembled for at least Two to Three months and this is with knowing what you are doing without having us walk you thru...

This is the last thing I believe anyone should attempt unless you have a shop set up and /or this is probably your 4th or 5th guitar that you are redoing completely, wether that be pickups, hardware or refinishing.

You will make mistakes and some may be very costly before you even realize what you did.
The choice is your's but the water is deep and cold.....

I say, GO FOR IT!
The hardest part is stripping the original paint and prepping it. I've used Nitromors and a LOT of sanding by hand. Takes a long time but is worth it.
Then buy a can of Sanding Sealer. Nitro Primer, and a couple of cans of Nitro Vintage White lacquer. Make sure it's pure Nitro paint and not precat.
I've repainted a Fender Roadworn in Sonic Blue Nitro. My first attempt wasn't quite right because I rushed the prepping stage. So took it all off and started again. Now it looks amazing and will age like a proper old Strat.
Once the paint has cured for a few months, then into the freezer to get some checking going! Then into the sun to get some tinting and fading.
Nitro is quite forgiving when applying, as long as you follow the advice already given about wet sanding etc. Take your time and don't be tempted to rush it like I did first time. It can be done!!!

I've stripped a body for a refinish.

ImageImage

It was a good hands-on experience, BUT if I were to do another, I would buy an unfinished body.
Good luck with it. Just remember, it takes dedication.

Goodonya ...Mark.

PS Ceri sir, we need to see your animated strip show again 8)

It's fun repainting a guitar. Don't expect professional results unless you're willing to take the time, effort and proper materials to make sure each step you perform is done just right. All it takes is one bit of carelessness somewhere along the line... and you're likely to make a lot of mistakes the first time around. A job that a pro could do in several hours spread over a couple of days may take you a dozen hours over the course of a week or two. One of the hardest parts to do is final buffing. If you don't have a workstation type buffing wheel getting that final perfect gloss on your paint job can be tough....

Which leads us back to if this is your only....One And Only ...Guitar then you will not be playing it for many weeks......

I been there...it's a trip to the ' Mountains of Madness " ( H.P.Lovecraft )

Sound advice is to either get another guitar to .........

(1) Guinea Pig and experiment....
(2) Another guitar to Play
(3) Another guitar to replace the one that is indefinitely detained.....
(4) Not and go ahead and hope/pray/barter/Beg that you'll get it right the 1st time out.
It's unlikely that your guitar will look like it did before. There is too much to learn by hands on and mistakes will happen

If you still want to do this go ahead, but heed the warnings and advice, that this is not a first time project for the DIY . It's just not that simple or easy....

Isn't Squierocker the OP's forum ID...... :?: :?:

Judging from some of his responses I'm led to believe that he is intent on doing this....
Sometimes people just have to find out for themselves that which was advised was legit....

I think I'm done here.... 8)

Ummm...did anyone bother to notice that this thread had actually been dead since April 2010? I suspect if said person was going to paint said guitar, the deed has probably since come and gone...

Just sayin...

Did not read every post but one thing to always consider any time you refinish a guitar you can kill, usually whatever value it may have had. Just look at the vintage guitar prices between refinished and original. What I have done is buy a body off Ebay and go from there also a great resource for refinish paint and directions check out Guitar ReRanch you can find them on the net.
Good Luck
