Without taking sides but answering your question, to some it is art, to some it is symbolic of a great playing guitar, to some it makes them look great (or any combination thereof). Regardless, if it enhances the owner's playing experience, then that's all that really matters.

See now theres a voice of reason I can get with. The paintjob as a players instrument is very secondary (even fourthundary :D ) to the way the guitar plays and feels. One of the reasons I dont like the roadworn range. Yeah ok some of them play great but there never gonna be like a masterbuilt unless ofcourse you get a master to rebuild em.

I play my guitars hard, I like to look at some of em and I use others as decoration around the house. The Malibu and the sunburst deluxe both look great mounted in my lounge. My customshop is wrecked and the hotrod is heading that way too. I cant help but play em. My old mexi strat is near worn out. The necks only 15 and it needs a refret desperately.

Dont even bring roadworns into it. There absolutely nothing to do with relic guitars.

Imagine the difference between a commisioned painting by a top artist and a print of the mona lisa. Thats the difference between a relic and a roadworn.

Relic's are individualy crafted works of art by the best builders Fender has to offer. Who perform the paintjob and aging by hand, to their own design/taste.
Roadworns are mass produced knock up on a machine, copies of the real thing.

Yeah, I know. I was just being silly.

Well Bluesky636 I totally agree, I would never drop that kind of money on something that has been artificially damaged. If it's a collectors piece that has been actually used by someone I admire that's a different story altogether.
I have two MIM Strats that have both been previously enjoyed and I love them both, I paid $200 for each and the person who owned them took excellent care of the.
I've posted a link to view my pics.
Post pics of your if you can.

I thought i'd chime in with my 2 cents.
While i personally dont like the idea of playing a relic'd guitar that hasnt gone through 30 years of playing with me (i have an AM Strat and plan on keeping it forever) - i have heard arguments that relic'd guitars have a much warmer tone due the lack of paint, and hence ability for the wood to resonate better. any thoughts?

Absolutely. Personally, I don't like white Strats. I know others like white in its various shades. That's what makes the world interesting.

I'm not a huge fan of the relic / road orn thing but I'd never say something bad about a guy's guitar (even if it's white).

I think the problem with thest threads is people tend to take things personally and then when an opinion is questioned, it gets heated. Truth is, everybody has an opinion about most things, and that's all it is, a personal opinion. Like my opinion on white guitars doesn't mean I'm right just means that's my opinion.

When someone comes on and likes white guitars, great and I'm happy for them with their new guitar.

Same goes for relics and road worns. It's not my thing but when someone has one, I'm honestly happy for them. If it looks good, sounds good and they like it, that's all that really matters.

Let's go make some music now. :-)

Jeff

Only kidding. :P

Seriously though, as has been said so many times before, the only one who has to love it is the owner and if (s)he does, that's all that matters and it's a beautiful thing at that. :D

Wow. People are still going about this one year after I started this thread.

Buy and play what you like. When I but a new guitar, it will look like a new guitar. End of story (Well, mine anyway).

NIce one, good for you. Priorities for me when buying a guitar is

1 is it comfortable to play
2 does it sound good

Colour shape or condition doesn't matter to me as long as it doesn't affect the above.

Here is my out look on it.
On relics there is no history but i love the look of them.
And on my current guitar i can name about every ding and scratch and what it came from. There is only 2 I dont know (before i bought it).
If you like the look but dont care about history go for it
But if you want history behind it buy a used guitar that is older and dont be gentle with it.

LOL, I thought someone would comment. :D

I'm glad you took it in the light hearted spirit in which it was meant.
