I did change the pickups to Duncan Stacks... I really didn't like the stock pickups.

My questions is, if i want to change the pick up what would you suggest?

Don't know - what tone are you looking for?

You have a little more than gazillion options for vintage tone in a Strat... from the Fender products to big manufacturers like Duncan and Dimarzio or boutique makers like Bare Knuckle. And of course there are cheaper options like Guitar Fetish... first get yourself a Strat, then see what you like or don't like about its tone... I didn't like the hum (so I got noiseless pickups), the output drop in the bridge position (so I chose a hotter bridge pickup) and the lack of transparency of the stock pickups (I have a feeling that most quality manufacturers can solve this problem).

See how you like the guitar, you might want to make it warmer/brighter, fuller or just leave it the way it is... then make the choice.

Its the tremolo arm spring dude, just put it on the hole of your tremolo bridge and your tremolo arm on the top.

I'm sorry that you had such bad luck with your HWY1. I love mine. After I had it set up it felt, played and sounded great.

I moved away for a bit and bought it with me. Being that it was my only guitar at the time, it became my main gigging fuitar and never failled me.

On the flip side I've playeda '69 and '65, and a David Gilmour CS Strats and I wasn't impressed.

I played 4 50th Anniversary American Series Strats and didn't care for them. I played a 5th and fell inlove.

Recently I played the '50s and '60s Road Worn Strats and they really impressed me.

I guess it all comes down to every guitar is different and quality varries. You got a bum guitar. Good luck in the future.

So what kind of Pups did you end up changing the stock ones out to?

Of the 7 Highway One HSS's:
The breakdown:
(Walnut) DiMarzio Area 67(n) Area 61(m) Gibson Burstbucker 3
(Sunburst) Fender Vintage Noiseless, Gibson 57 Classic Plus
(Ebony trans.) Fender Vintage Noiseless, Gibson 498T
(Daphne Blue) Dimarzio Area 67, DiMarzio 36th Anniv. P.A.F.
(Black) Fender Vintage Noiseless, Gibson 490T
(Amber) DiMarzio Area 58, DiMarzio P.A.F.
(Wine Trans.) DiMarzio Area 58, Dimarzio 36th Anniv. P.A.F.

With pickups such as these....the stock ones can't even come CLOSE!

I checked some of your videos at YouTube, you have very fine guitars, guess those sets the question whether HW1`s are good guitars, they indeed are, after change of pickups. Furthermore you play very good electric blues, your style and tone(!) remind me of Roy Buchanan, although he was a Tele icon.
Your playing deserves better recording quality!
I have thought of getting a SSS HW1 too, but i can`t find one with small headstock here in Europe as new.
I think a little hotter Toneriders than Surfaris could be a upgrade for it, if i can find that guitar.
I have a Gibson SG, i have never thought to change pickups on it. You seem to like Gibson hb`s too.

I have a pre upgrade 2004 Hwy 1.
The guitar sounds more like an old 70s strat than my 2009 US standard (plays and looks just the same but not with noiseless pickups).
I have always considered the Hwy 1 upgrade as an actual downgrade.
Jumbo frets large headstock and and those terrible pickups, an upgrade? don,t think so.

Agreed. I have a 2003 Hwy1 that I like more than some of my "better", more expensive Strats. Never liked thelook of the "upgraded" Hwys.

I wonder how the American Special line is selling?

Why thank you!!
Highways are nicely made hunks of resonant wood with nice necks, BIG headstocks (MY preference!) and cool finishes that will be "Road Worn" on their own in time! It's just that, as mentioned, (IMHO) the stock pickups SUCKED!!
So you see from my videos what these wonderful guitars are capable of after well needed pickup changes!
I've always LOVED Roy Buchanan, though he's not a primary influence on me as Jimi and Robin Trower are.....he definitely has creeped into my 'licks library'!!
I recorded those with a digital camera that has a video recorder function.....hence the crappy sound! One day I WILL invest in the proper recording equipment!
Yeah...I have 4 Gibson Humbuckers (498T, 490T, BurstBucker 3, 57 Classic Plus) and I LOVE them!! Nice ballsy , chunky....all the GOOD things you want from a ROCK pickup!
My latest favorite is the DiMarzio 36th Anniv. P.A.F..........GORGEOUS sounding pickup!! NOT high output at all! Just like the old ones!!

Are you asking how can you tell what year your Hwy was built? The approximate year is part of the guitar's serial number. The letter and first digit indicate the year. For example, my 2003 will begin with Z (for zero) and 3 indicating '03.

Man i am glad Fender is scrapping the Highway One Strat. What a low end pile of junk. A Highway One may be okay for a home player hobbyist but that junk isn't gig worthy.

As a proud owner of 7 Highway One Stratocaster HSS's...I would have to disagree!
The bodies and necks on these guitars are wonderful, resonant pieces of wood.
What I WILL agree on is the ELECTRONICS issue.
Let's face it.....the pickups SUCK!! After scrapping ALL the pickups, cheap Ping tuners, and putting on Graph Tech saddles.....I must say....these are some of the finest guitars I've owned!!

Well after changing the Nut, Tuners, Electronics and Pick-ups You might as well bought a different guitar that had better ones in them from the start!!!! You can bet being the low cost American product it is that the body and neck are not from the best of wood grades. You might as well buy a Squier Standered and just change everything or an MIM Standard.
