Have the upgraded model - very fine instrument indeed.

I upgraded the pickups to Seymour Duncan for slightly less hot, but could happily have lived with the stock p/ups if I'd had to.

Enjoy your Am Std - another very fine guitar.

I have a 07 highway 1 fsr with stock custom 50s pickups in it and i love it and mine has the small headstock. its all the individual guitar you can go sit and play 3 identical standards and they will sound different.

I love mine, it's a 2004. I didn't like the newer ones with the 70's headstock. I will admit, the fret work was less than desirable, but I got mine for a steal at $350 new (has a big dent on the bottom). Had a bone nut installed and the frets dressed, threw some Texas Specials in it. I'll have it forever.

dang and I thought $500 for a new one fresh out of the box was a good deal...at least the ding on yours is on the bottom and no one will see it! nice score.

I'll probably end up putting some Kinmans in mine at some point, i have a brand new set sitting in the box waiting to be used. although, the stock pups sound good to me...i just dig the Kinmans

Afraid not Sonny......I've got a modified Fender Hot Rod DeVille, Modified Pro Junior, and a Bogner/Line 6 Spyder......all VERY competent amps.

The stock pickups are weak, thin, and crappy sounding!

I demand more from MY pickups!

So what kind of Pups did you end up changing the stock ones out to?

Of the 7 Highway One HSS's:
The breakdown:
(Walnut) DiMarzio Area 67(n) Area 61(m) Gibson Burstbucker 3
(Sunburst) Fender Vintage Noiseless, Gibson 57 Classic Plus
(Ebony trans.) Fender Vintage Noiseless, Gibson 498T
(Daphne Blue) Dimarzio Area 67, DiMarzio 36th Anniv. P.A.F.
(Black) Fender Vintage Noiseless, Gibson 490T
(Amber) DiMarzio Area 58, DiMarzio P.A.F.
(Wine Trans.) DiMarzio Area 58, Dimarzio 36th Anniv. P.A.F.

With pickups such as these....the stock ones can't even come CLOSE!

Sorry you have had issues with your Highway 1. The only issue I had with mine was the G string tuner. I ended up replacing the tuners with locking tuners, what a great up-grade.

I was fine with the pickups, but for some umph, I replaced the bridge pick-up with something a little better. I also put a 500k volume pot in at the same time. The Greacebucket circuitry is still intact. I absolutely love my Highway 1.

I played nightclubs in California most of my life & lived and played a few years in Nevada too. One thing that I always kept in mind was to never use equipment than brings your sound down. Anybody who makes a living playing music has to pay the price for a professional instrument to support them. Then, you need a backup just ion case. I believe that Fender does a good job in the under $1000 guitar or amp category aimed at the the player who is not playing for money, but still wants a decent axe.
