I've never liked the simple high-cut tone controls used on so many guitars since the very beginning. I don't even bother to use them. In college (many years ago), I designed a simple IC-based active tone control that boosted and cut both bass and treble. That was with a cheap Les Paul knock off that had plenty of room in the body.

Today I am thinking about just turning the existing tone contols on my MIM Start into volume controls. That would provide a volume control for each pickup and allow mixing of pickup levels based on the switch position. Has anyone done that? If so, what were the results? Was it a useful mod? How did it sound? I'd like to get some input from others before I try it. TIA.
