That's the vibe I got from him--except he didn't treat me like a fan. We talked about Hendrix and music and not about him which is why I think he was so happy after we talked.

Great story. El Mocambo was what got me back into playing my guitar. But why was he just standing there staring at you?

There is no way that I can know what was going through his head but I'm thinking that, maybe because it was obvious I worked there (I was cleaning my Imports rack at the time) but since I didn't approach him it made him curious about me. Mind you, that's only speculation. I don't know what was going through his head but whatever it was, I'm grateful for it.

What a great story and something you will rememfor the rest of your life. I am shocked to learn that he was that short because he had hands the size of someone 6'5 lol. To be honest the day he died was the only time I ever cried over someone I did not know.

That's an anatomical trait shared buy Hendrix and SRV. Physically neither was very tall but their hands were huge. I too share that trait-- I'm only 5'8' my shoe size is a 12.

Cool story, manabu.

I'll be eternally grateful for SRV. I can vividly remember the first time I heard "Pride And Joy." I was in high school and was elated that someone new on the scene was playing the music I loved.

I was never a Flock Of Seagulls or Kajagoogoo kinda guy.

That song kicks! It's one of my all time favorites and it's a part of my set list.

OMG Flock Of Seagulls? I saw schlepping Duran Duran records and Flashdance soundstracks. 3 tone mullets and everyone dressing endogenously. Women were all wearing suits with shoulderpads--gaak!

I was dressed in old faded Levis set that day. My top was actually a denim jacket that had it's sleeves cut off.

Yes, I have that video (el Macambo) AWESOME! and I just watched Live from Austin TX this weekend. I had a chance to see him in a medium sized club in Connecticut where I grew up back around '83-'84 era. Missed it, still regretting that decision. The intro for Couldnt stand the weather is Sooooo BAADDDDD!!! That song Made me a SRV fan ! of course I like all his stuff now. A Legend 8)

Couldn't Stand The Weather--The intro IS awesome but his funk rhythm is just as serious.

Killer story man, we really appreciate you sharing it with us. We sometimes forget that the people we tend to idolize are no different than we are in the long run.

Awesome story, thanks for sharing. :)

I really wish I could have met him at least once. It was never a possibility considering I'm 17. Most of you already know this, but SRV had a huge impact on me. It would have been nice to have been able to say thank you.

Great story, and I think that's why you connected...you talked about his hero and yours.
Billy Cox lives here in Nashville and SRV had him come on stage when he toured through here, and I've heard he was happy to be playing with one of his heroes.
Around here you come across some big name people from time to time some are nice some ain't.
I'm glad to hear SRV was cool.

I recently went to see the "Experience Hendrix" Tour here in Ohio and when I got there Billy Cox was in the lobby signing autographs.I had a chance to chat with him for a few minutes and he seems like a cool and personable person.Very rarely do you see any of the artists mingle with the guests.

great story! my guitar instructor knew Stevie and Jimmie both and has some cool stories about the two of them. Always nice to meet someone like that and have the chance to interact with them on a real life person to person basis.

Here are some cool shots of that period: SRV rips off a couple of his trademark scorching hot blues riffs with his battered ol' "# 1" guitar.

These pics are not mine. They came from various SRV concerts in 1983/84.
