it really depends on what music you want to play. with 700 dollars you have ALOT of great options.

The Highway 1 and American Specials are both excellent guitars for their price.

The same goes for an MIM standard. With $700 I'd probably buy one of these and swap the pickups.

Nothing wrong with MIM Strats and don't fall for the automatic swap out the pups statements you get as that has been disproven more often than not.In the very early days "some" MIM guitars had shoddy pups but that's far from the case now.I have 3 MIM Fenders and all are excellent guitars in fact my latest MIM the Jimmie Vaughn Strat is an exceptional guitar,I paid around $900 Cdn for it but it's probably cheaper in the US and well worth your while checking out.BTW early best wishes on your birthday, let us know what you decide on and post pix.

It depends what you like the feel of i personally didn't like the feel of the jumbo frets (which the highway one and American Special have) however its completely a personal thing you may like the jumbo frets more.

for that price range I'd probably go with a MIM Stratocaster Players Deluxe it has U.S.-made Vintage Noiseless Pick ups if you like Noiseless that is.

Its a good idea to try out a few guitars in your price range and see what you like the best as your the one playing the guitar.

What kind of amp do you have? I recently had that much to spend on a complete rig, but I needed an amp also! I got a used MIM Strat off ebay for $250 and a new Blues Jr from Music 123 with a 20% off discount and had $50 left. Of course, later on, I upgraded the speaker and tubes in the amp; the pickups and bridge assembly in the Strat. Also added a few choice, essential pedals (compressor, OD, Distortion, Delay & Chorus).

If you have an amp that you like; I'd check into getting a used American Strat!

$700 limit...I would get either a Lone Star Deluxe or Roadhouse. You need to factor in the tax and on $700 you will pay close to $735 to $750 (guestimation). These are great guitars for this price range. If you wanted to save some more money, the MIM Standard Stratocaster is a good guitar as well, but sounds different.

Are you a beginner?

Do you own any other guitars?

Do you know which style neck you prefer? Which pickups?

Totally agree -- Get the Roadhouse in a 'burst. It is right in your price range. And it is a fabulous Strat that you won't need to make a single change on.
