Welcome to the forum. The American Specials are very cool. As far as being a good choice? Well that's personal opinion and music style dependant. I believe the American Specials may be assembled in Corona, CA possibly. I don't know really. Hit up the Fender website.

Now is a heck of a time to ask if it's a good choice! Of course it is... YOU played it, YOU liked it, YOU bought it. It's yours, it'll be even more you as time goes on and you bond with it. Rock it and post a pic.

I just checked out the same guitar at a GC about an hour ago. They are really nice. I would have to say it is a high quality good sounding guitar and the price is right too. So, yes. You made a good choice.

The old American Specials are now known as the American Select. Mohagony body, black classic (small) headstock, 2 Tex-Mex Single Coils, and a Diamond Humbucker. Very cool guitar for around $1300 USD.

The new American Specials are Alder bodies with either 3 Texas Specials or 2 Texas Specals and a Atomic Humbucker. The headstock is that 70's oversized headstock. They run for around $800 UDS.

IMHO the two are very different guitars but both awesome.

I just bought mine yesterday and this thing is ridiculous! I have been playing Ibanez for awhile now and this is my first fender, I have always wanted one so I traded in an old Epi SG that I had collecting dust and now I have to say this is probably my favorite guitar out of what I have. I couldn't put it down last night..

Dude...we have the same taste in Strats. I own the GC exclusive..Mahagony Special Strat, now being called the "Select" strat by musicians friend (owned by GC) and the Black HSS Amer. Spec. Strat too! I love them both. I agree that the Diamond back and Atomics need a little more umph, but they are good enough especially if your amp has a gain knob. I also own an 09 Amer. Std Strat in 3 color burst with maple fretboard. Awesome!!!
