Actually, I have. It was a red 1956 one that was warping in an arch toward the back from top horn to bottom horn. Not only was the finish splitting in numerous places but most of the pickguard's screw holes were stretched and split as were most of the pickguard screw holes in the wood themselves and the whole area around the backplate; not a pretty sight! In spite of all this, it still played fine.

A red 1956, huh? Was it a one piece body? Unlikely if it was a solid color, I'd say.

Yes. Yes. Agreed but it was.

How do they know it was a one piece body?

The person who owned it stripped it in an effort to rehabilitate it. Being present when he stripped it, we both clearly saw that it was one piece.

So how did that effort turn out?

Have you ever seen a split body?

He steamed it flat under pressure but it only lasted about two weeks. As you know, wood has a proclivity to do what it is going to do and unrestrained, the grain is just going to keep doing its thing. We could clearly see that it was beginnning to go right back to the way it was.

I don't know if this counts but coincidentally, this same guy stripped another Strat body. Whatever he dipped it in caused the lower third of the body (horizontally) to cleanly separate at a glue joint.

Just for fun, I email the good folks at Warmoth and asked them about warping of the one-piece bodies they sell. Here's their response:

The chance of body warping is very, very low. I have never seen it in solid bodies. And 1 piece bodies are not more susceptible.

So I guess a warped body is like hen's teeth.
