Good point Doc...well taken. Maybe I should have said that the next time someone asks "What's a Stratocaster?" I'll have to remenber to say "Ya know all those guitars behind Eric Clapton in his cell phone commercial? -Those- are Strats!", LOL!!!
>Great segway. Think I'll give it a go next week and update the thread.

Almost makes you wonder if Hendrix had of lived, what kind of TV commercial's he'd be doing now huh? 8). Jim[/quote]

Cell phones for sure, and maybe some of the product currently being niche marketed by personas like Snoop and P-Ditty.

One of my friends was at an Allman Brothers concert and they were playing... Dreams, and a girl at the concession stand asked him,"Who is that guy butchering that Molly Hatchet song?"
Now to me that's a criminal offense!

When the future generations ask "John Lennon?"; "Michael Jackson?"
"Ma-who-nna?"................

So there they were, these 2nd year- predoctoral geniuses in their white clinic coats, gathering for the usual Thursday evening exercise in preclincal restorative procedures. The learning for the evening was the use of CAD/CAM technology in the indirect fabrication of dental restorations, a technology not unlike that applied to fabricating necks and bodies in the manufacture of guitars. In the bandying back and forth among the faculty and students as to the positives and negatives of investing in this rather pricey technology, I happened to observe aloud that, for the cost of having that technology in my office, I could buy myself a couple of vintage '57 Stratocasters in mint condition. Hard on the heels of that observation came the question, from this young genius wannabee doctor at my side:

"What's a Stratocaster. :?:

Doc :?

Any chance that was a CEREC machine?

One of each generation, as a matter of fact.

I was in a record store one day in the late 80s when I saw 2 teenagers looking at some Beatle recordings when one said to the other:"One of them was shot wasn't he?"My first thought was what kind of parents does this poor girl have?Imagine growing up and not knowing about the Beatles.

That's a shame!! I have 3year old grandchildren that walk around singing Beatles songs. When we get in my truck they always ask me to play the Beatles for them.
Poor children today don't have the variety of good music like we old timers did. I know the younger members here will disagree with me but...... That's ok!! :)

I have a similar story. While at work the doctor's receptionist and I got onto music conversation and I told her I played a Stratocaster. At first she was like what's that? Then I told her it was an electric guitar. She said, "Oh...like the guy from Guns and Roses plays?" I said, "Almost."

I know that non-musical people can barely tell the difference between a guitar and bass, let alone different brands of guitars. I just let it go.

I figured. Right now I'm staring at about $2 million worth of milling and aquisition units, mostly MCXL's and their spare/upgrade parts and some Galileos. Such are the joy's of working for Patterson Companies. ;) Had some German peeps in from Sirona yesterday, small world. :)

On my first date with my wife, I was testing the waters of musical history (my own fault) when she replied "Who's John Lennon?". If it weren't for the fact she rebounded with her better than average knowledge of Johnny Cash and that she did know who "The Beatles" were, that would've been the end of it. Good thing, later I found out she's bad with names, but good with bands.

OK. I have officially found a post that made me feel like a stuck-up idiot, LOL. I was expecting a philosophical discussion of the fine points of what a Strat is. You know, whether certain pickups or different modifications take it out of the "Strat"-o-sphere, so to speak.
Now I realize that I must be one of those guys who occasionally forgets that not every member of the human race is fascinated by these instruments that play a pretty big part in a lot of our (the guitar-playing community's) everyday lives.

On a side note about Clapton, though, I took my nephew to see him in New Orleans last month. I'm proud to say that after the show, he looked at me and said "Now I understand why you love Strats so much." It made me feel like I had done a little something for my favorite guitar, my favorite guitarist, the preservation of blues-based music, and the younger generation in general. I built him a Strat last summer, and I'm proud to say that he's hooked, too. :D

Here's the followup. Thought of your anecdote when it happened so I chose to post it here. Downloaded one of Chromeface's excellent pics of Eric and took it with me on Thursday. Stuck it in the face of this mid-20's year old and asked: "Do you know who this is?" With a stymied look on his face and after a long, pregnant pause he replied, hesitantly......"Allman's?" :?
I replied, "No!" "Eric Clapton, and THAT's a Stratocaster!" :?
