So there they were, these 2nd year- predoctoral geniuses in their white clinic coats, gathering for the usual Thursday evening exercise in preclincal restorative procedures. The learning for the evening was the use of CAD/CAM technology in the indirect fabrication of dental restorations, a technology not unlike that applied to fabricating necks and bodies in the manufacture of guitars. In the bandying back and forth among the faculty and students as to the positives and negatives of investing in this rather pricey technology, I happened to observe aloud that, for the cost of having that technology in my office, I could buy myself a couple of vintage '57 Stratocasters in mint condition. Hard on the heels of that observation came the question, from this young genius wannabee doctor at my side:

"What's a Stratocaster. :?:

Doc :?

That reminded me of a young counterman I once employed who across a busy store on a Saturday afternoon shouts, "Hey Joe! Camaro, who makes that?"

I'm a Medical Physicist in a Hospital and I help teach the Radiology Residents during their 1st 2 years, so I'm familiar with the type of "tunnel vision" some of these folks have to get where they want to go.

Awesome story ZZDoc - thanks!

I was in a record store one day in the late 80s when I saw 2 teenagers looking at some Beatle recordings when one said to the other:"One of them was shot wasn't he?"My first thought was what kind of parents does this poor girl have?Imagine growing up and not knowing about the Beatles.

Not all folks are musicians, much less guitarists. And we likely do not know much breadth and depth in other "common" subjects.

Cut the kid some slack....

Another record store story, when in Memphis Tenn. several years ago I made some purchases in a record store when I presented my credit card they asked for my drivers licence, when I produced it the salesperson said "Newfoundland, what state is that?"I guess the poor girl didn't realize that there was a big world outside of Memphis.

I'd bet that most who know what a Stratocaster is might not know what
a Lentulo spiral is :?:

Wow - the amazing thing about this story is something very similar happened to me today. I was in a guitar shop, Vintage And Rare Guitars, looking at old Strats. I heard some guy remark: "Hey, for the cost of two '57 Stratocasters I could by CAD/CAM technology for the indirect fabrication of dental restorations..."

What are the odds?

The guy had a white coat on...
