Aaron,

Since it was a Japanese guitar and case, it is possible that they had packed a stick of incense in the case originally. There are lots of readily available incense sticks out there but if you are going to try it, don't buy cheap drug store stuff. You can smell all of the boxes :0) and buy the one you like. Leave it in an envelop, in the case. Really not a bad idea actually.

No it's not possible. Are you seriously thinking that Fender Japan ships its guitars with incense?

This thread got even weirder. I don't reccomend any of the suggestions to put airfresheners, oils, incense, etc etc with a guitar in its case especially if it has a nitro finish or if you want to sell it someday.

You want that new guitar and case smell, well go buy a new guitar and case.

What would scent do to a nitro finish?

Knew that was coming :0)

At the Hendrik Experience a few weeks ago, they burned incense on the stage for 30 min before the show started. Probably made the guitars smell funny too.

Nitro is susceptible to reacting badly with all sorts of chemicals, probably especially the ones that make up these artificial scents.

Funny you mention that... When I bought my les paul custom, I went over to the guys house, and not only did the house smell like weed... But the guitar and case reeked of pot...

Only recently has the guitar lost that smell after about 1.5 years... It certainly didn't bother me considering I bought such an incredible guitar for such a great price...

The smell you were probably smelling in your Fender case was probably either 3M Contact Cement or 3M Spray Adhesive. Go down the Staples, buy one of each and take a couple deep breaths of each...holding the breath in as long as you can. When you wake up, you can decide which aroma was closest. If it doesn't come to your right away, take a couple more deep breaths. When you wake up from your coma, you should have the answer.

The smell you're getting from the Les Paul is proabably Nitrocellulose Lacquer de-fuming. Nitro has a very distinct sweet smell to it. But becareful with it, breathing Nitro Lacquer has the same affect as above.

By the time you get brand new guitars, most of the fumes have already dissapated. When I first got my body back from the paint shop with newly shot Nitro, I couldn't even sit in the same room for more than 5 minutes without getting light headed. I ended up having to let the body cure in a closet for 2 months before I could stand the fumes.
