Question for all on the forum?

I bought a Japanese Strat with fender hard case brand new back in 1993--it was a sweet Purple "Foto Flame" finish, with a maple neck and white pickguard. I vividly remember the smell of the case, it was a sort of Vanilla/Musk combination. Long story short...I do not have either the guitar or the case anymore, and I would like to re-create that scent in my current elec. guitar case.

I am wondering if there are any folks out here on this forum that know what I am talking about, or if Fender used or still uses some sort of scent with new guitar cases.

Looking forward to hearing theories...

Aaron

The SKB case that came with my Strat doesn't have any noticeable scent that I can detect but the case that came with my Les Paul does. I don't know what it is but it smells great every time I open that case. 8)

Ahhh...that new guitar and case smell.
Are you serious in thinking that Fender purposely adds that scent????

The smell is a mixture of the chemicals and glue that make up the case and interior. Plastic molded cases like SKB don't smell as much as those old school ones with the tolex on the outside.
The new guitar adds to the smell especially if it has a nitro finish. ...mmm...nitro.

New Gibson's smell kind of sweet.
New Rickenbacker's have the best chocolatey odor. They are my favorite. If you could bottle new guitar smells, you would make a killing.

Well what do expect a case over 20 years old to smell like?

Exactly my point, I want to re-create that scent (if it is possible) and add the scent to my current Fender guitar and fender case that do not have that scent at the moment.

Does this make sense?

Yes it makes scents. Get it? Makes scents, instead sense. LOL!!!!

Well break it down. Your '93 Japanese Strat had a polyurethane finish, probably some rubbing compound still lingering, new plastic parts might have a little odor, and finally top it off with a hint of fresh basswood and maple.

I assume the case was one of those plastic molded ones, so factor in that bitter plastic smell and the sweet odor of the glue used to attach the inside lining. I'm not sure if the lining itself smells much.

So get yourself some polyu, rubbing compound, etc ,etc basically everything listed above and mix it together for the new guitar smell. Watch out, it might get you really high too with all those chemicals, especially the glue and polyU.

Maybe a chemist might be able to artificially recreate some of these odors.

I'm pretty sure the new guitar and case smell fades away as the finish and glue outgases and greasy sweaty hands are rubbed all over the guitar while playing. Cigarette smoke really takes a toll on new guitar/case smell too.

The smells you guys are talking about are from the glues used to hold down the upholstery.

Some hide glues absolutely reek, and some can smell like you describe.
The smells usually gi away as the glue cures, but some of the stinkier ones can smell for years.

I bought a hardshell case for my Yamaha acoustic (not a Yamaha case) years ago and it had a delicious chocolate vanilla scent that was very strong so strong that anyone within 5 ft of it could smell it when it was opened.I bought it in 83 and there's still a faint trace of the smell remaining.

There are such scents to be found in our guitar cases, but they only come at certain times..

Just the other day after watching the Jeff Beck at Ronnie Scotts DVD, I opened my strat case to be greeted by the bitter odour of Despair and Hopelessness.

I distinctly recall the smells of Depression and Frustration in the case every time I watch the Clapton Crossroads Festival DVD.

Odd isn't it?

If you are looking to re-create a vanilla/musk scent for your case, I suggest you go to the car parts aisle of Walmart (or similar). They have a section of car scents that you can add with all kinds of selections. There is a good chance they might have something close to what you are looking for. That way you can cheaply, easily and safely "scent up" your case.

Post back how this ends up ... on whatever you decide to do. I am curious.

The smell is most likely carnauba wax on the guitar.

I never had a smelling guitar case, but my Highway1 Strat had a nice Vanilla/musk smell the first months.
