I've bought three new guitars online, and love each of them. I was very lucky. That way, I also saved on sales tax.

I havent seen a burst I dont like. But I like wood grain. I will admit that ash has a better grain (like my 3 bursts).

To buy online you need to know what youre buying & see lots of pix.
Ive been very lucky. Only 2 bad purchases, but both times the owner took some money off.

Most of the vintage strats I've seen have had pretty crappy burst paint jobs... just sayin'!

As stated earlier, some are awesome and look great and some just look awkward. Those havy black outlines with the strong contrast just do not do it for me. I wish they would let me paint my own . . . and then finish it for me.

I agree that it is entirely subjective. Guitars are definitely like women in that we all have different taste. (From a male perspective) What looks ugly to one person might look great to another.

I love the culture of the small guitar store so I will not buy online unless it's a deal I just cannot pass up. I also don't want the model that's hanging on the wall if I think it has been handled too much. I like the smell of brand new.

On the other hand, I had one of the most beautiful sunburst strats that I purchased new in late 90's, one of the original roadhouse series. The grain and coloring on it was superb, problem was it had no tone, absolutely dead piece of wood.

Be careful. Your supposed to declare that at tax time.
