I would have to go with the majority and never buy a guitar unseen. It can be difficult when the color you want is not available locally though. Thanks for all the feedback. Unfortunately, I am not good enough to buy solely on tone, I want it to look good.

Here's what I like except I would prefer rosewood.

Gldfshkpr has a army of piscine followers who regularly raid banks, get the groceries and take his undies to the launderette.

He's not a chap to be trifled with. You really dont want to end up out of the frying pan and into the fire with him.
Is his rank 'Koi-nel' (apologies to alain!)

You all are too funny. Yes Celtic. It stands for goldfish keeper. I've had goldfish that would swim into my hand. They're very personable creatures. Contrary to popular belief, they thrive in big bodies of water. I could go on, but this is a Fender site, not an aquarium site. Ha Ha. So yeah, your not insane Celtic. Nice to meet you.

Seriously why do it? Dont you want to play the thing before you shell out for it.

Not possible for everyone unfortunately. I live in Ireland and although there are some ok music shops, all are small and very very limited in what they stock. You want anything outside of a std Am or Mex strat, youl have to order it in, which means paying a deposit on the guitar before they will order it, which is usually around 10% of the full price.

As prices are pretty high in ireland, that 10% can be a nice wad of green, especially if you end up not taking the guitar.

Ive bought online twice and have been lucky both times. Id love to be able to go to a store and play a bunch of guitars until i found the one i liked, but its just not fesiable here, and i imagine the same goes for many other countries.

As someone who buys online and 80% of the time I have no choice as most of the guitars I buy are discontinued models so it is a role of the dice. Thank God I have had nothing but mostly good fortune. As far as Burst my Blue Burst Strat Ultra is as pretty as it gets, though I may be bias as blue is my favorite color. But my Cherry Burst American Deluxe Tele and Ash Strat are works of art. I have not seen another guitar company do Cherry Burst as good as Fender and that goes for Gibson to.

Hey, why not? We've covered practically everything under the sun--not just guitars. The Fender Lounge allows for non-guitar topics. Share your passion! 8)

Ah - see, I've always read it as "Goldfish Kipper". I just assumed the gentleman likes smoking and eating his pets...

yup... not a fan of some of the the newer models... the ones with the huge black outer ring. The mexican standards are even worse (with the black extending all the way down the contour on the backside...)

I agree... it's nice to see one in person, ordering one sight unseen seems like a crap shoot IMO.

The reason the black color of a 3 tone sunburst extends into the contour is that the body is not one type of wood. It has a veneer on the back, and the lighter sunburst finish would expose the lamination in the contour areas. Fender has been known to add a nice-looking veneer over top of a less than beautiful solid body to save money on production costs.

Like everything else, the 'right' sunburst is entirely subjective..

The bigger truth in this series of posts is about buying on line, sight unseen.

The simple truth is that the more people buy on-line, the more real shops go out of business. So wave goodbye to the opportunity for feeling the guitar in your hands and the chance to make the hundreds of tiny calculations you need to make to buy the right instrument. Also wave goodbye to proper after sales customer service, proper guitar setups as part of the deal and say bye bye to a cool place in which to hang out on a saturday afternoon. Many people learn their love for instruments by seeing them in the flesh, by touching them and by hearing them played by the skilled performers that are always to be found in the shops. There's none of that visceral experience on the internet.

In the UK, we've just lost the "Reverb" chain of stores, who had a major presence in our big cities. Actually, they took over "Sound Control", another chain who went to the wall. For the first time in my lifetime, Birmingham City Centre - the Uk's 2nd city - does not now have a major music store. Were it not for PMT just outside the Centre, musicians in my town would be screwed..

I'm with you, Jazzy. To me it's like going to buy a brand new car and purchasing the one everybody has test driven.

No thanks.
