I want a tobacco burst or some other burst but what scares me is sometimes the burst job looks horrible. Sometimes they look awesome and on others I would be mortified. If buying in person, not so much a problem, but if buying online it would be a major issue.

I want a nice smooth fade, not a sudden and awkward change of color.

Does anyone else think that sometimes the burst are just dreadful?

yup... not a fan of some of the the newer models... the ones with the huge black outer ring. The mexican standards are even worse (with the black extending all the way down the contour on the backside...)

I agree... it's nice to see one in person, ordering one sight unseen seems like a crap shoot IMO.

I'm 100% certain that the 11th commandment is

THOU SHALT NOT BUY ONLINE AND EXPECT A GOOD GUITAR OUT OF THE BOX

Seriously why do it? Dont you want to play the thing before you shell out for it.

Personally, I'm in the same camp as ninja. Besides, looks aren't everything in a guitar to me. Its more about the feel, the tone and that certain something that wispers in my ear ever so quietly if I'm listening. Corny? I don't care. It works for me.

Just wondering, does your forum name mean 'goldfish keeper' or am I going insane that I read that every time?

Didnt you know, I thought it was common knowledge?

Gldfshkpr has a army of piscine followers who regularly raid banks, get the groceries and take his undies to the launderette.

He's not a chap to be trifled with. You really dont want to end up out of the frying pan and into the fire with him.

I was very happy with the burst I got... The ebay photos don't do it justice...
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... K:MEWNX:IT

In reply to Niki's comment.. Sometimes it's just not feasible to play an instrument before you buy it... I never would have been able to do that with my Guild X-170... THere are none for sale here in Arizona...

I do, however, regret this past strat purchase.. I should have played/inspected that guitar before buying.. I could have found a nice used strat here in Phoenix... That was a bonehead decision.. But in the end I think that strat will do just fine..

I've kind of adopted this as a rule as well, although I had to buy my Daphne Blue Hwy 1 online because I couldn't find one in ANY store I went to. I lucked out though. The oly other way I would buy a guitar online again is if I find a good deal on either a Guild or DeArmond hollow-body. Otherwise I have been burned too many times with ebay purchases.

If you're talking about the new US Deluxes, the Sunset Metallic Sunburst finish has that nice smooth fade you're craving for.

Looks like a Candy Tangerine fading smoothly into a silky, subtle shade of yellow.

BTW, the Aged Cherry and Tobacco Sunburst finishes look fine on a grainy ash body.

I've seen some pretty dreadful bursts but mostly on low end guitars.I'd never buy a guitar sight unseen, you never know what they may try to unload on you.

Well you know lads I live in this little place where things are still a bit antiquaited. You can buy online but you can also take a trip and try the thing out. I'm of the mind where I like to see a guitar in its best light and weigh up if I can get it from there to what I want.

I know it's not easy with modern shopping trends. It's one of the main reasons I hate internet shopping. It's self propagating, the more you rely on it the more indispensable it becomes. Twenty years ago we'd have never bought on the strength of majority opinion. It was play before purchase or forget it. I know that modern shopping is a aid to some but I cant get past the pay for what you get mentality. If I bought a guitar online I'd not feel in a strong position to return it if I didnt like the paintjob.
'It's perfectly sevicable and does its job, I just dont like the paint.'
makes me feel a bit on shakey ground.

I understand your sentiments...
I am looking at all the guitars on my wall... and all the ones I ended up keeping instead of selling...

2 of them I either inspected or played before buying...
the remainig 3 I got off of ebay..
2 of the 3 amps I have, I got off of ebay..

The biggest issue is trying to find a nice hollow body or semi hollow body here in Phoenix... And when there is one it's either insanely priced or a piece of junk...

I once had an es-175 (Gibson) that I bought off of ebay.. It was what you would expect... a high quaility guitar .. I sold it becuase of financial reasons...

I guess to each his own...

I think I agree with Niki. Only shop online, when you have no other/better option. If you can't get what you want locally, you have to look at other avenues. I have yet to buy a guitar without playing it, and there's only a select few i would even consider doing so.

i think we probably all agree, that it's a safer bet to try before you buy, and try to limit sight unseen as much as you can.
