say - you owe alot of $ for a rebuilt transmission so you want a pink bullet strat for $100 but you cant afford sd pickups. i dont know if this is good - i just thought of it while i was smoking in the garage.

1)change the wiring so the 3 knobs are bridge volume/middle volume/neck volume - bridge at 7 for rythym/middle turned all the way off/neck all the way up for lead
2)put the middle pickup all the way down to the pickgaurd and the neck and bridge pickups almost touching the strings
3)put a screw at both ends of the switch slot so its easy to switch from pos 2 and 4 fast

so when you use pos 2 it sounds like bridge without hum and pos 4 sounds like neck with no hum and the middle turns it off without touching the volume knobs at all. that might be cool for poor people.

is that possible? using only the pieces the guitar comes with?

you might be able to wire the knobs like that.

but if you put the pickups too close to the strings, the magnets are gonna screw with the string vibrations, and possibly cause more feedback.

you could always shield the inside of the pickup cavity to reduce some hum, and avoid the entire confusing setup situation.

Single coils do hum no matter how low you put them away from the
pickups. Using a reverse wound/reversed polarity middle pickup will
give you hum free sounds in the 'in between' switch positions.
