My vote is for the Blues Deluxe and try to find one that is not a Reissue. I've had both and they are sweet amps with just enough wattage and take pedals very well.

Yeah, check out this one, the LC 50

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l1gv_qXs7dg

The first rock'n demo tone would be too shabby on any led zep song. Shouldn't be too hard to dial in a Black Sabbath tone from there. Comes in a 30 watt model too.

I take it you're in the US. Use this map to find a dealer near you.

The other guitarist in my band has the 30 watt laney. it's plenty loud for band rehearsal and the tone he gets out of it is amazing. Definitely ROCK tones :)

It would be a great favour to yourself to make the trip to your local guitar shop, sit down with each amp that you're interested in, and A-B them in person.

There is too much ambiguity surrounding amps. You're going to get a thousand different answers on what to get if you turn to a guitar forum.

Think for yourself and buy what you like, not what other people like.

Sorry if that came off as rude.

I second that! Listening to anyone go on about the supposed endless merits of this or that amp will just add more confusion to your purchase. And, all of the amps sound different and possibly even better with one guitar over another.

Aside from build quality issues, and country of manufacture, which is not an issue for many people, its all very subjective. I personally don't like Mesa amps at all, but clearly many people do, and they are made quite well, one of the criteria for me. But for sound, they don't do it for me. I also don't like the fact, that with the exception of the Vintage re-issue amps, all of the Fenders are made in either Mexico or China. I personally find the HRDx empty, flat and dull. Having said that it is one of the top sellign amps, so clearly it works for a lot of people.

There is likely "a sound in your head". Go and find it. The only way you can do that is by trying them out - with your guitar, not the one in the store. And, make sure your guitar has a new set of strings on before you venture out. Many of the amps, possibly all of the amps in the price range that you have quoted, could benifit from a speaker upgrade, some more than others.

Many people go on about the endless upgrades that they perform or would like to perform. Go and find the amp that you like the sound of, ask yourself if you can live with the modest imperfects that it will contain (and for $700 or less, it won't be perfect), and then break it in. All of the amps sound better after a couple of months of playing. For example, I have read many people complain about the ear piercing sounds that come from the Peavey Classic 30 with the boost switch engaged. And, I would say that they are correct, when the amp is new, but not after regular playing at about 3-4 months of age. I know, I have one, and I can say for certain that the ice pick sound at higher volumes with the boost switch engaged is no longer an issue. But then, I have had mine for almost five months and it gets played about 2 hours a day, and at a range of volumes. All of the amps improve with time. And, in a perfect world we'd all have 9 or 10, so that we could use a different one each day, the way we change our underwear.
