You could check out some used Marshall combo amps like the 4210,it has a Celestion G-12-T-75,reverb,effects loop, slave out,and a great overdrive/boost channel that brings out more than enough raunch. The a4210 is 50 W and doesn't weigh nearly as much as a 2-12 combo yet the T-75 can really move a lot of air.You can pick up used ones in the price range you're looking for.You can pick up some used JCM 800 and 900 gear in your price range even a 2-12 cab with a head can do a great job, the 2100 head can be 50/100 and has 2 master volumes the 2101 is a 1-12 combo version. The 2500 is a 25/50 head with the same features of the 2100 and the 2501 a 1-12 combo and the 2502 a 2-12 version.

Dont bother, their good amps but not what your after. Very fizzy high gain, lack of mids in the bass end.
Try this

Try the Peavey ValveKing -

Image

50W all-tube power for $420 - it's an excellent hard rock amp.

I just picked up a used Classic 30 for under 350 and would put that in that catagory as well.Nice little amp.You can get a 50 watt with either 2x12 or 4x10s for probably real cheap.

I havent tried the valveking ,but I just bought a used Peavey classic 30 for 349 and it has some nice tones. The el84s can sound very Marshally. At your price range you could probably get a classic 50 used.It comes either with 2x12s or 4x10s.Has 2 channels and reverb.Personally , I loike the 4x10s,but it has a speaker extension plug ,so you could run an extension cab .Check out ebay, but you can usually find these amps to try at a Guitar Center. You go there , try them out and then check ebays completed listings to see what they run used.

If you want Tonni Iommi's tone, grab a laney.

The only problem with Peavey is that they sound like American amps. That constant thickness and lack of definition in the bass end with any amount of drive. Great if you want that sound, you cant knock their quality or price.

Laney are well worth looking at, better than Marshall in a lot of respects. How popular are they off these shores though?

It really depends on how much power you want. If you think that 60 watts is too much, 50 watts is not going to be a whole lot different. I love the Peavey Classic 50 in either 212 or 410, but it is large, heavy and very, very loud. I play with the Classic 30 and really like the sound, particularly on the first channel. It too can get really loud, but delivers a great clean sound from 1.5-3 or 4. At 4/12, it too is really loud.

I didn't really see anything great out there in tube amp world where the 2nd channel produced any great sounds, and that goes for the C30, as well as the Fender BDRI. The 2nd channel on both of those amps really needs to go through an EQ pedal first, and then threw your cry baby, gain pedal or what ever. That being said, a pedal will work wonders on the first channel to give you the modded sound that you are after.

On the C30, when in 2nd channel mode, the tones have to be adjusted quite a bit from the settings on the first and that woudl be a pain in the but to have to do on stage. Better to just use a pedal on the first.

Everytime I go into a store, I test my C30 faithfulness by trying out different amps. And, I'm still not disappointed in my choice, and I'd make the same one over again. For under $700, and made in the USA, it's a great amp. The only other (mass produced) amp that I really liked the sound of the Strat through is the Princeton Reverb, @ $1000, though it does sound great a low volumes.

I'll likely get a boutique amp next, something in the range of 20-30 watts, as with thise amps, you are getting a quality hand made in USA or Canada product.
