Im still in the market for a guitar with a humbucker. From trying out a many guitars i find im just more at home with a fender style guitar.

To this end i am looking toward the standard HSS or special HSS. None of the local shops have one of these though.

The std strat has the Diamondback and the special strat has the Atomic.

Im wondering if anyone has had a chance to review one or the other, or preferably both and can give a bit of a review and/or comparison of them.

I have an Atomic in my Highway One. I really like it. It's harmonically rich and the output is far beyond the standard Strat single coil. I use it mainly for hard rock/metal through a Digitech DF-7 or my Boss Metal Core and into the clean channel of my HR DeVille 212. The pickup is great alone for rock but I prefer pushing it a little harder.
In my opinion you can play clean or blues with the Atomic but it's got some bite even with the tone and or volume rolled back. My particular guitar has the "Grease Bucket" pots and like I said I use it for rock and metal. I use traditional Strats for traditional Strat tone.
The only suggestion I can give you is to try to play guitars with both pickups. I'm not familiar with the Diamondback.

Very well said. I have an Atomic in my American special HSS. For me it's a little bright but i can live with that. I was going to buy the SSS. But to me the Three CSB and rosewood fretboard looks and plays to good to pass up.

Perhaps I'm a bit harsh....but I personally think they both SUCK!!
I had both pickups in a combination of Amer. Dlx. and Highway One Strat Hss's and I couldn't wait to get rid of them.
I replaced them with a combination of Gibson (498T, 490T, 57 Classic Plus, and BurstBucker 3) and DiMarzio humbuckers (particularly the 36th Anniv. P.A.F. ....I LOVE this pickup!!)
I couldn't be happier and my guitars sound amazing!

Ooooh.....the perfect person for my question!

I have an American Special Mahogany HSS Stratocaster.

Now, I love this guitar - the feel, action...everything is perfect. I can get all the sounds out of the Single Coils that I want (Clapton, Hendrix, Mayer, Tom Petty, PF) and I've been VERY happy with the humbucker (Diamondback), but not amazed.

EVH is my favorite player, and he essentially was dropping a Gibson Humbucker into a Strat, which it appears you have done an entire research project on.

Which one of them gives you the best EVH grit? I realize the body isn't big or dense for Slash tone, but which one comes closest? (my mahogany body will help some) What about AC/DC or Aerosmith?

Thanks in advance HWY1Strat!

I personally do not care for the Atomic Humbucker. Persoanally I think the Diamondback a little better than the Atomic. But when it really comes down to it, it is a personal choice as to which one you will like. Let us know what you decide.

My choice was Dimarzio Super Distortion for my last pick-up change.

If I had to pick 2 of the Gibson Humbuckers.....I say the 498T or the Burstbucker 3.

The 498T is a bit wilder and more 'in your face' (in the best way possible..mind you!) whereas the Burstbucker 3 has more of an 'old school' , classic rock sound.

Some of the best equipment choices I've ever made was putting those pickups in my Highway One's! It gave the guitars a whole new 'personality'.

Just curious...N 8)

The Atomic the Hot Rod and the DH-1/Diamondback are the exact same pickup.

Fender only really makes 3 humbuckers well 4 the neck atomic or Dh-1

But here they are the Standard or Tex Mex alnico 5 8 ohm the DH-1 Diamondback Atomic Hot Rod alnico 5 16.5 ohm and the Enforcer ceramic highoutput 24 ohm

I have a 2004 American Series Stratocaster HH with a Sidewinder and a Black Cobra. How do they fit into this picture?

What genre of music is it for? Metal, Rock, Blues?

From what I have researched, the Atomic, Diamondback and Hot Vintage Alnico Fender hbs are almost the same. So a Standard HSS, a Special HSS, and a Blacktop Strat with HH or HSH will have similar bridge tones.

The Fender Enforcer is the highest gain Fender-made hb. Featured in a lot of the Pawn Shop guitars.

Of course, there are a plethora of Fenders with non-Fender pups... the Seymour Duncan Pearly Gates Plus is probably your best blues rock choice and is currently in the MIM Lone Star but used to be used in the MIA Lone Star as well. Seymour Duncan Invader is a good Punk and Hard Rock pup.

Of course, you can also always drop a stacked hb, or two, or three, into any single-coil Strat. Or rails!

It really depends on your music tastes.
