So I have two questions regarding my American lone star strat.
1) when I back my volume knob back from 10 to say anywhere from 3-9 I get this really loud humming sound. I don't hear when the volume is all the way up. It hasn't done this up until about 3 months ago and I have no idea what it could be other than a bad pot or ground.

2)on the same guitar the 5way blade swithch is really strange. It has two blades of contact points. Almost like there is a second swithch in the guitar. I've never seen this before so as far as tryin to figure out what the buzzing was as discussed prior this swithch baffled me. My only guess is it has something to do with the bridge humbucker but my '71 tele thinline doesn't have a switch like this.

Can anyone help me with these two issues? Thanks

1. It COULD be either but it could also be one of several other culprits as well. This is one of those maladies where a hands-on inspection is required.

2. Your switch is a 'two in one' type configuration if this is what you are asking. It is necessary for the proper operation of your bridge humbucker in terms of killing one of its coils in pickup selector switch position #2. The rest of your statement I honestly am having trouble comprehending. Regardless, it still all comes back to my answer to your first question.

I also have the hum or buzz when the volume is backed off from wide open on the strats vol.control.Mine has CS 54's wired with a blender pot in place of tone 2.I have not addressed the hum yet but I was going to try a fresh vol. pot.

If Martian without seeing it cant give you a definite answer your best bet is to just take it to a good shop near you and they will find out what the problem is. Better to have a pro do it right and be playing with peace of mind in a day or two than going nuts for a few weeks.

See, this can go around and around and around. Is the pot bad? Is there a treble bleed causing this? Is the blender bad? Is it a no-load because if not, that pickup is always on in parallel in the circuit which will of course, cause interaction. Is the overall wiring questionable? Is one or more of the selector switch's terminals or leads to it grounding out against the shielding paint when the pickguard is reassembled onto the guitar? Is the selector switch bad? Are the cables being used questionable? Is the jack touching resistor paint when plugged in? Is the capacitor leaking? Is there a stray strand of wire touching something it shouldn't? Is a lead wire pinched causing a short or suppressed current flow? The list goes on and on and on. Hands-on can definitively diagnose it in a minute (in my case, any way).
