Try playing around with your pickup height

Can you be more specific with what aspects of the pickups disappoint you? What tone are you looking for? What amp are you playing through?

Put your old pickups in.

I think we need more quantifiable data in order to fomulate a reasoned conjecture.

if you looking for hard rocking sound, i think you should try to using little humbucker pup, like : dimarzio tonezone S, fast Track 2, seymour duncan JB JR, hotrails, and the similar pups model

I think you'll love them

good luck ! ;)

I don't think Strats sound too good under high gain. They sound great from clean to moderately gritty. They are not metal guitars.

You're not even describing your problem.

I hate to say this but for your stated stylings, the 69s are a poor choice. They are weak power wise and midrange wise by design. For Hard Rock, overall stronger pickups with a healthy midrange are required. Short of changing the 69s, you might want to consider a premium EQ pedal in order to dial in some extra power and midrange. Bear in mind though that your 60 cycle hum from the pickups will increase.

So, why did you even spend the money of a set of '69's (as in the year 1969), if you want to play mostly like hard rock? Try looking for kickass pickups from the decade of the music you want to play. My recommendations are as follows:

Late 70's through the 80's - Seymour Duncan JB full size humbucker.

90's - WGAF? That music sucked anyway!

2000 to date - Seymour Duncan Blackouts.

Yeah, I like Duncans. Deal with it. Grunge sucks; it shortens your life expectancy according to your success at it. The point of single coils is that jangly Fender clean to mildly gritty tone, but certainly not hard rock. Yngwie's guitar has stacked humbuckers. Hook it up and play.
