8) Bluestube's got it right.. This is the best setup for playin out an
stayin in tune.. Hendrix used 5 springs , But I can't verifi that the bridge
was on the guitar deck.. But I been doin that for 30 years..It works the
best for stompin the bar to the floor , lettin it slam back an "WOW" it's
still in tune.. Harmonitcs on the dot...Premo gang.no better way !!!!

After driving a long way to get one of these springs, I've found it to be completely worthless.

Yeah, yeah, you were right but I had to find out for myself. Do you keep the bar loose or tighten it up so it stays put?

The little trem spring works great for keeping the trem arm in the place you put it IF you don't over-tighten the arm.

As for the number of springs in the back: unless you lock the trem down, tuning stability is not a factor of how many springs, but of a properly cut nut.

I use 3 springs and float my trem a full 1/8 inch per Fender spec, and I have no tuning issues because the nut is good and so there is no place for the string to hang up and cause tuning problems.

If there is nothing preventing the string from returning to pitch, it will.

When I wind my arm in, it gets to where I can tell the it's hitting the spring but it keeps popping out of the thread. I wonder if the threads are stripped. If I take the spring out, it winds in properly but requires a little pressure to get it in past where the spring was.

Groove, it does sound like you've got some crossed threads in there. To be honest, I've heard people say that the little spring can even cause that problem, but it's always worked well for me and I've never bunged the threads in a block.

I'm giving up on that little spring or getting a new tremolo block for my Strat. I took someones advice and wrapped some of that white teflon plumbers tape around the bar. Works perfectly. It's .99 cents a roll and you can keep it in your guitar case if you need to hit it again.

The spring in the bottom of the tremelo arm hole is there to keep the tremelo arm from being too loose in the threads. It is to put tension on the base of thr trem arm so it does not "click" while the trem is being depressed. If your tremelo arm clicks while in use, it may add some play to the threads in the trem block aqs it is used. You can replace it with a pickup height adjustment spring, or any spring you have lying around that will fit in the threaded hole. Just trim it to about 1/4 inch high, and put some lube(3-1 oil) on it so it doesn't bind up.

[quote="chrismageown62"]i have benn useing the tremolo on yr 62ri strat a lot in the past few gigs and just found out that i have no spring in my tremalo hole !!?? do i need one ?? and have i done any harm buy not having one ?? and what dose the spring do ???

I have the same question myself. How do I tell if the spring is in there and does it just serve to keep the arm in the position you choose without threading it all the way in? How long is this little jewel?

i have been considering putting a set screw in the back of my tremolo hole to keep my arm from swinging around (i have no spring, and it sounds like the spring is a waste anyway).

can anyone tell me if i'm going to cause any problems by doing this?

thanks (this place is a wealth of knowledge!),

caddman
