If in fact All your pickups are single coil you'd have a very hard time finding any piece of gear to go through to give you a humbuckers sound and responsiveness..

Agreed... You're gonna need a bucker if you want any chance of getting that ACDC sound...

Lets not forget to pay Malcom his due. You do hear him quite a bit even on the recordings. Very solid rhythm player. He still uses a double cut away guitar, anyone know what it is?

Doc Paul you have stacked almost everything against you in your quest for "Angus Tone". Your basic gear choice is wrong for that sound.

1) Strats are single coil guitars, SGs have humbuckers (the pickups sound totally different)

2) Fender amps are not known for their awesome distorted tone (it's all about the clean or moderately overdriven tone with Fender amps)

My first suggestion would be to buy a different amp for a more "Marshally" tone then add a humbucker to your Strat (but buying an Epiphone SG would be better).

If you are committed to just the one amp and just the one guitar, experiment with settings and be satisfied with "as ballsy as you can get"

Clearly you have 2 choices as I see it .Either to get new gear and try to acquire the "Angus tone",or work with what you have and develop a tone thats all your own.You can have hints of your influences in your tone, but I would encourage you to start a quest for your own sound.Dont get me wrong, when everyone first starts out ,they pursue to sound like their hero. But somewhere along the way they find their own voice. Its a great journey and there is alot to learn along the way.

Mal plays a Gretsch (that his brother George gave him) with one of the pickups removed because he never used it and it kept making noise even when "off".

I read in a recent guitar magazine that Malcolm wears out a pick per song, or something like that - he apparently strums hard.

I've got a strat, and I've been using a Line 6 pod with a Frontman 25R. Usually for AC/DC, I use the Marshall Plexi Lead amp simulator, and play with the distortion pedal choices. But my teacher told me, as someone above said, that AC/DC distortion comes more from running the amps at the high end than from boosting the input.

I do the bridge/mid pickup combination, with a little pedal and the strat volume at 10.

My 62 reissue Tele with Dimarzio Fast tracks nails a really good AC/DC tone or any classic rock tone-it is one magic ax. Also remember as has been stated a lot already they play pretty much clean.

Gold Lace Sensor pick ups are very thin sounding. Buy a Radial Engineering Plexitube tonebone for $320 because it has areal tube and the most tone shaping that you can get in a distortion pedal. It features true bypass and two channels for two levels of overdrive and two different sounds. You can use the most extreme 12db of midrange boost and adjust the parametric contour control to get a very thick Marshall type of distortion with as much gain as you will ever need on channel two of the jpedal.

Try buying a prewired pickguard with a humbucker in it.

Carvin:

Guitarcenter:

Then you can enjoy the feel of your strat with a whole new set of sounds to work with!

I have a Les Paul that I play (try to play) ACDC on. It has that ballsy, rock sound like Angus Young.

You need to be sure the guitar body is routed for it.
I don't really think you'd get a great AC DC tone from a solid state amp.
