I am 62 years old and have been playing since I was 15. A long time ago I knew a musician who had a strat with a mute in the bridge. It was made of metal with (I think) a cotton pad that you could flip down onto the strings to give a mute effect while playing free. I have never seen or heard of this in recent years, so my question is, has anybody seen or heard of this as it was kind of a cool attachment.

Wow Glynn you posted this three times, you must really want a answer eh?

I'm only kiddin with ya mate, please dont take offense.

Jennifer Batten (Guitar virtuoso for Michael Jackson) developed a string mute that clamped onto the headstock and damped the nut end of the strings. Not exactly what your after but you may be able to adapt it to suit your needs/

Ive seen a lot of people use common hair bands right on the first fret against the nut. Comes in handy for tight and clean recording. You can flip it on or off. Theres also heavily overpriced mass produced products that are the exactly the same thing.

Usually glued in place, spongy rubber or felt was strategically placed inside the bridge cover on the top of it. Once the bridge cover was affixed to the bridge, this rubber or felt would now come into contact with the strings facilitating the muting effect.

Could he have cobbled up the bridge assembly of a Jaguar somehow to get it to fit?

Actually, the sponge rubber and/or felt were used widely by Fender from mounting pickups to muting. The material used for the Jaguar mute (felt) would be among the same stuff. The felt was used in lesser individual quantities such as the mute and the sponge rubber was used for example as the springs of the pickups in Precision and Jazz Basses. In a direct answer to your question though, the felt of one Jaguar mute would not be enough to fill the inner crown of the Strat cover to where it would have enough mass to lean on the strings in the right place.

I knew a guy in high school in '67 who had a Mustang with a mute on the bridge. It would've been great for Mrs. Brown by Herman's Hermits. I saw them on Sullivan playing the song with a Ric 360 and the guitar player used a rag under the strings at the bridge to get the plucking effect.
