I saw another SNL show in 1990, which contained two other tracks from Journeyman ("Pretending" and "No Alibis") and an extended, emotional version of the ever-popular "Wonderful Tonight" which was included on Clapton's setlist during the Royal Albert Hall shows and the Journeyman world tours of that period.

These videos were posted by Dappidu on YouTube a couple of years ago. Bad luck, Warner Music Group has censored them and Dappidu's account has been immediately suspended by Google.

Fortunately the 1990 SNL show can be easily found on many Japanese tube sites such as YOUKU TV, hence's a good reason to not be disappointed so far.

Here's a nice pic of this naughty boy (George's famous quote is plenty of fun, really!) playing the smoker's model during his Japanese tour with George Harrison in 1991/92. Eric has stopped smoking cigarettes since many long years ago (around 1993/94).

"This is the first black custom EC Signature Strat. It was made for Eric by Mike Stevens at Fender Custom Shop. Originally the signature Strats had three colours:Torino Red, Seven-Up Green and grey-which started as anthracite and was changed to pewter very, very, early on-This Strat has got...cigarette burns on the headstock...from Eric...smoking. I think this is the last smoking guitar. This to me is one of the killer guitars. It was played an awful lot through the early '90's. It hs no serial number on it because it's the first (black) one, almost like a prototype. It was Eric's suggestion at the time. He said we should really have a black one in the range. So this is the first officially sanctioned black (EC Signature ) Strat."
Lee Dickson....Crossroads Guitar Auction Catalog 2004 pg 86.

FYI: neck end inscribed R&D #1 CS 2/23/88 and stamped in red ink in the neck pocket CUSTOM SHOP/Fender USA. It was his main stage guitar from the Summer of 1990 until March 1993:
US/South American/Japan leg of Journeyman tour; the RAH '24 Nights' season; the Harrison tour; the Bob Dylan 30th Anniversary Concert; the Cream reunion performances at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame 8th Annual Induction Ceremony

The neck date is of interest in that the Clapton Signature project had hardly gotten into production by then. However, the guitar, as shown and sold is fitted with a 22 fret, heavily played neck, with the cigarette burn pictured above.

On a personal note, I have a preference for the 21 fret solid maple neck, though a couple of mine have the other.

Glad to have made this little contribution. 8) Now let me get some sleep.

Doc

Jeff, the Natural Ash Plus with the DiMarzio humbuckers and the Lace Chrome single resembles pretty much to Hiram's battered sunburst modified Fender Stratocasters and his natural ash-bodied Atelier Z clones. Hiram's guitars had a 21-fret and a hot single-coil pickup with AGED WHITE COVERS AND EXPOSED POLEPIECES (presumably a Seymour Duncan Classic Stack humbucking pickup or a Fender Fat '50s).

In fact, this natural ash Strat Plus with the DiMarzio/Lace HSH chrome-covered pickup layout is truly a nice interpretation of Hiram's Atelier Z Strat-style guitars. Congratulations!

Nice out-takes from your collection. I've seen those before. Anyone who hasn't visited your website ought to do so, and be prepared to sit down. You and Ceri would make some team!! 8)

The official change to the Vintage Noiseless pickups occurred in 2001, though Eric has already started using his updated signature models during his triple induction to the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in March 6, 2000 (see pictures). Why?

BTW, he really looked much like the late Buddy Holly, huh? :P  :!:   8)

You seem to be well informed enough to recognize the fact that these guitars serve as R&D platforms and may be employed by the artist through a variety of modifications until finalized. The VN's would not have gone into the Artist Series guitars until then. I would suggest that this observation is likely the answer to your question.
