Yeah a prospective purchase. I just wanted to find out the full score on the lack of serial no' coupled with the the fact that its branded Orville only. Not Orville by Gibson.

I just dont know enough about em to make a informed decision of any kind.

(Bump.)

Hey, Nick: I'm under the impression we don't see a lot of Orvilles in our part ot the world, is that right?

And these days we don't seem to be seeing a lot of Mr Orville, either... :(

Cheers - C

That's a nice Orville Les Paul (for Big Jay: Gibson Japan used the name Orville instead of putting Gibson on the headstock of their MIJs. They were made for about 10 years from 1988 to 1998.).

It's not a top of the line model, those have "Orville by Gibson" on the headstock, as you know. It does not have Gibson USA pickups (those are only used on the top of the line models), but Gotoh knows how to make decent pickups.

I haven't kept up on the prices, so you'd be wise to see what other Orvilles and Orville by Gibsons have sold for recently and bid accordingly.

Just doing spring cleaning (yeah, right).

I like the "is this fake" and "vintage strat" threads ... not many of them lately.

And I've been processing some old concert tapes ...

Ah right so the Orville by Gibson branded ones are the ones to have then.
I'll just find a Orville by Gibson then. The price seems to be about the same as all the others. The condition is what got me interested and the fact that its a goldtop. I'm really going off bursts with a vengance, no matter who its made by.

Ceri they pop up quite frequently. As discussed previously I've decided that a Epiphone, les paul studio or Orville is the only way to go to avoid the gibson neck binding issue. I'm just not paying £1800 for a guitar that demands I alter my technique because the binding rarely meets the fret edges. The more I've been and physicaly looked at LP's the more I see it. I'm sure its a issue you dont notice unless you bend up and down. But I do and I'm too long in the tooth to go changing for some plank. Hence my current interest in Japanese guitars with fret over the binding, like all sensible builders do.

The Japanese-made Epiphones (Elites, Elitists) are very nice (essentially Orville by Gibsons, but with Epiphone on the headstock).

If you don't need a Gibson-brand on the headstock, the recent Fujigen Gakki Les Paul copies are also very nice (with Circular Fret System!).

Thankyou Keiths, I'll be paying close attention to that site, as I could do with a few parts.

O.O I'll take a look at them. Circular frets you say, hmmmm.....
