My Fender dealer told me it would be 6 - 8 weeks to get my new American Standard Standard because Fender had none in stock.

Is this normal?

Over here, it seems to depend on how unusual what you're buying is or whether the store has just had a sale and they're out of a lot of stock with other orders to fill before yours.

I was looking at a similar wait for a Highway One here, but they had an identical looking American Standard that felt great (but cost much more!) so I ended up with that instead of waiting.

Do they have anything in stock you might want to try instead?

He didn't have anything else I was interested in at that store. It is my old college roommate's place and I want to give him some business so I will just wait. At least I will know that it didn't hang on the wall forever and get handled by the masses.

I was going to have to wait until first week of May to take delivery of an Am. Std. Precision Bass on backorder from Fender.

Welcome, I am rather new here also, but a great place to get info. It probably depends on where you live. I am here in Milwaukee, WI and one of the local stores is having a Fender sale this week and another is having a big Fender sale on April 3 hosted by Greg Koch himself. It will be a good time.

Sorry you have to wait. It is kind of like waiting for the kid to be born but better in some regards. :D

If you have the patience wait! My first purchase ended up being bogus. I kicked back, got a lot of great information from the forum, and 4 months later I fell into what I wanted.

Good Luck, & Relax,
Mark

Lets face it one of these things could have happened:
Your dealer buys in bulk through their head office who is waiting for big shipment.
Fender could be out of stock and making some more. A call to Fender or another dealer should answer this question for you.

Your international or somewhere where it does take that long to get to.

If they want all your money before the item as arrived your dealer might only order every so often and likes taking money up front to have more cash on hand.

You negotiated a deal on the guitar and your dealer doesn't care how long before they get one in or if it arrives (happens in car sales).

Your dealer is under delivering so you will happy if it arrives earlier.

My advice is shop elsewhere and see how long they say it takes.

"Fender could be out of stock and making some more."

This is my understanding. And based on the Musician's Friend and the Guitar Center websites, both are awaiting shipment on the color I am requesting as well.

I should emphasize, the dealer is a long time friend in a small store. His stock is limited so he orders what he doesn't have on hand from the manufacturer.

I might could get it faster from MF or GC, maybe, but I like to support the little guys in the business.

Your desire to help your friend is a great thing. Part of the fun of getting a great guitar is in the anticipation. Enjoy that part rather than let it frustrate you. It makes the arrival even sweeter.

Hope it isn't too long.
