I'll be in the market for a new guitar soon and I've decided to upgrade from my well worn Squire to a Stratocaster. I've been checking out some different websites and I'm a bit confused about the differences between types of Stratocasters.

I definately want an American model, and American deluxe is what I'm considering at the moment. I also might go with the Malmsteen artist series. Can you guys give me some recommendations and some specific things to look for when buying a new guitar? I'd like to hear from people who own American Deluxe and Malmsteen stratocasters and what your personal experiances are in regards to these guitars.

Thanks,

-Rahul

I own an EJ model. I am getting accustomed to it by playing it everyday. Its a totally different guitar than my Ibanez. The neck on the EJ is definately fat.

Good luck with your choice.

here's how you pick a new guitar.

1) go to your local guitar shop.
2) grab a guitar off the wall and plug it in.
3)if it doesn't play or sound good, grab another guitar.
4)repeat until you find one that you like.
5)buy it.
6)live life happily.

this is also how you pick a new amplifier, bass, piano, and basically anything else related to musical instruments. hearing somebodies experience can help, but it will never be the same as picking one up for yourself and playing it.

I agree w/ Ben13 go play them!. But play them unplugged first. Listen to the sound unplugged and compare them. Also try finding a similar amp to what you will be playing through. All I'm saying is if you plug into a $5,000 amp it's going to sound better than your $300 one and you will be dissapointed when you get it home. The feel of the guitar is just as important as the sound.

I played an American stratocaster at the shop yesterday and it sounded amazing. I definately prefer the maple neck to the rosewood one on my squire, it's smooth and very fast. I was surprised at how easy to play it was, even for fast complex arpeggios using classical fingerpicking. I might stop playing my acoustic once I get a stratocaster.

What is the difference between an American and an American Deluxe. The American stratocaster sounded pretty damn good to my ears, but compared to a squire probably any stratocaster would sound good.

Play many guitars, don't rush it...it's been said "the Guitar will choose it's Owner" , meaning you'll know which one is for you when you play it.

Buy the one that feels the best and sounds the best through an amp that you own. There are so many different models and sounds, in the end, it has to feel right for you.

I have also have an American Deluxe Strat it is great. A lot different than my Clapton Strat or my Teles. I can get 10 different sounds with out even bending or running it through a box of some sort. It can answer any style you play, rhythm or lead, it is one of the most versatile guitars out there!
