HI CHAPS, FIRST POST FOR ME HOPE SOMEONE CAN HELP

ive been a strat player my whole life, for me there is only one guitar.Ive recently fell head over heels with Jeff Beck's style he is amazing!!.Now to the technical bit.If you know the beautiful solo instrumental, ''Where were you'' by Jeff, he hits harmonics and using the whammy he dives down so many tones to achieve the melody i am at my wits end as to why i can not replicate the setup on my guitars?? Question, If one fits a tremsetter which acts in the oposite direction maintaining string tension on the unfretted strings aswell, might this be the reason Jeff can drop so many tones on a single dive??Does anyone know if Jeff Beck strats have a tremsetter fitted as normal??Do yous think string gauge plays a part, any help greatfully appreciated, George from Scotland UK. old faithfull in action youtube link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7DpXRMmvrik

Hi Musicfunkydude and welcome to the forums. Jeff Beck used many different types of guitars ( and strats), some with Floyd Rose's on them which might be the reason for the deeper drops. My understanding of the tremsetter was it helped maintain tuning and helped the return to normal after using the trem, but it didn't give you a wider range in the trem. There are others on this forum with a lot more knowledge that can maybe shed some more info on your question. It may just be a set up issue. Again welcome to the forum. :D

Thanks for your welcome and your reply mate, i just watched a "how to install a tremsetter" on the youtube and the guy shows you that when a fretted note is bent up 1 or even 2 whole tones the low e string still stayed at pitch ? with a regular trem set up all the notes would drop heavily in pitch, this is where i was hoping the tremsetter may help in allowing a greater pitch drop by maintaining tension on the other strings? i might be scraping the barrel but ive tried everything , hope some other strat players might have some ideas, all the best, George.

Hello!

I have recently enquired about the pros and cons of tremsetters and will be installing one on a partscaster soon.

Heres a thread that might help

http://www.fender.com/community/forums/ ... hp?t=28497

I saw Jeff Beck live on his 65th birthday in June 2009. Same band line up as the Ronnie Scotts gigs. Possibly the best gig i've ever been to. I had great seats and saw everything. It was a master class in guitar control! Seeing him play "Where Were You" live was, quite frankly amazing. ( the above is copied from my post on another thread)

I don't think Jeff Beck uses one. His set up allows for some serious whammy action. I have my trem (2 point) set up so i can go up a full tone (2 frets) and down 6 semi tones (5 frets).

Hope this helps

Andy

Mike Eldred made a few comments on JB's trem setup. He has it set so the high E pulls up a whole tone. That means the open G will pull up to around C/C#.

No tremsetter installed. JB doesnt even have his guitars intune, which allieviates the problem of tuning stability. Apparently he just puts his fingers about where they need to be and bends or dives to what he wants.

It's on the 'Ask Mike ELdred' section of the forums.

I read somewhere that Eddie Van Halen used to make graphite powder with a file and pecil lead, then mix it up with a little vasaline and apply it to the nut slots and bridge saddles. This was before locking trems of course and I know you can buy this stuff over the counter (I just found it more fun to do it the old fashioned way). Anyway, I tried it and low and behold my vintage trem stays in tune pretty well. Even when I dive bomb.
I also did the trick where you back off the four middle bridge screws just a little and removed on of the string trees.
I had a trem setter on a guitar once and they are a neat little contraption but I don't think you have to have one to stay in tune.
