Hey Ya'll,
I was recently scrounging thru one of my parts boxes and I ran across a pair of pickups that I had forgotten I had. I think I had bought these at a guitar show many years ago for -real- cheap (I think I got them for $2 a piece). They're "Evans"...they kind of look like EMG's in that they are completely sealed...here's a picture...

I do remember trying to hook them up on something when I got them and at the time they seemed completely dead (which is how they ended up in the parts box) but looking at them again now I'm wondering...could these be "active" pickups like some EMG's? I honestly have no experience with active pickups at all. As you may be able to see in the pictures, there are 3 leads coming off these things. Is it possible that one of those leads could possibly be a power lead that should go to a battery since on both pickups there is a "red dot" on one lead? If so, would it be safe to assume this would require a 9 volt battery? With that, any idea how I might go about testing them as well?

I've tried searching on Google but other than a couple of very vague references, haven't come up with squat on these...and I don't think I've ever ran in to others just like them.

So...any thoughts here?

As always, thanks!
Jim

All I know is that for years, they were Jeff Healey's pickups of choice.

There are some specs listed on this site. Maybe they will help.

Thank you -very- much for the link! Apparently they don't make them any more but there is an email addy there so I just dropped them a line...maybe with a little luck they can give me some insight in to how to test them.

Again, thank you!
Jim

Troublecall beat me to it,I remember an old Guitar World interview with Jeff where he said he used Evans pups in all his Strats-which were usually Squires in his early years.

Hey Guys,
Just wanted to let ya know that I did in fact get a response back from Gil at synapticsystems and he was able to refer me to the info I was looking for. I went back and retested these pickups and not only are they passive, they do test as good with around a 10 ohm reading. Since I don't have a bridge pickup to round out the set (and I'm not really holding my breath over finding one on Ebay), I just ordered a "Lil Killer" from GFS (also 10 ohm) so once that comes in, I'm gonna put those old Evan's along with the GFS in the new 03 MIM and see how they sound and I'll let ya'll know my results.

Thanks again for the link...twas -very- helpful and again I'm grateful!

Peace,
Jim

Those pickups are passive true humbucking single coils. They are wound in a figure eight, I've known Rod Evans for years and he even installed one of the first few sets in my strat. I would love to find another set. Many famous guys used them for a while but fender introduced the lace pickup in their guitars and they killed Rods sales. I know for a fact SRV had a set and liked them. So did Pete Townsend. These are from the days when there weren't many options for quiet strat pickups. To my knowledge they are the only true single coil that cancels the hum. I'll buy a set if there is anyone out there who wants to dispose of them. http://www.billjohnsonblues.com
