I just bought my first strat... It's a late 80's Japan model.. Can I do better with the pups ?
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... K:MEWAX:IT

I want that blues crunch... I am looking to spend no more than $100 for the 3 pup set... I am willing to buy used... Or maybe the Japanese pups are just as good ??

Welcome to the Forum.

The pickups in it should work just fine. Play with the pickup height.

Just something to look at. I'm not experienced with these pups but maybe some others here are.

For $100 it's not very likely that you'll find a set of pups that are better than the ones that are in the guitar already MIJ Strats are of good quality in fact some are great but someone who knows more about them than me would most likely know what years are best.Anyway I'd be very wary when buying used gear especially pups on ebay as maybe the real reason someone may be selling them is because they were poor in the first place. BTW welcome to the Forum.

Welcome to the forums.
Chet is right, stick with the ones that came with it. Adjust your guitar and find the sweet spot in your amp. Spend your 100 dollars on a good "blues" peddle

Just my opinion

That is a Contemporary Standard 22, they were made from 1985 to 1989.

As I said earlier leave the stock pickups in it and play with pickup height. Do a search for my post on the "Nickel Method" for a starting point on the height.

I'd recommend leaving the stock pickups in for a while. Maybe you'll end up loving them, but you wouldn't have known if you had changed them out right off the bat. And for blues, just about anything works anyway.

If you've messed around with the stock pickups for several months and for some reason you don't like them, then check out Fender Tex-Mex pickups. They're a little hotter than normal Strat pickups with extra bite. And they're right in your price range. But stick with stock until you absolutely know what you want. Otherwise you could buy a new set of pickups only to discover you liked stock a whole lot better. I've done that before, it wasn't worth it.

Thanks everyone for the advice... Good news is I can leave a 20+ year guitar original... And it will save me time and money... It's always nice to keep instruments original... I will give it a go for now with the stock pups

Thanks so much CA... One more question....

Are there any strat models/years made by fender/squire where a pickup replacement would always be an improvement...

For example, just about every Epi Dot/Les paul made by Gibson in china/Korea would benefit greatly with an electical/pup change...

p.s. I am leaving this one alone for now...

IMO most lower end Squiers could benefit from a pickup/electronics change. Although I think they've improved over the years. From what I've heard the new Classic Vibe series are already very good stock. Some say they can even compare to Fenders. I think a good guitar is a good guitar regardless of where it's made or what the headstock says.

I have a 2000 Affinity Strat which I added Texas Specials to. I wish I had recorded a before and after, because it sounds like a different guitar. It still doesn't sound as good as a SRV signature Fender, but when you consider the total cost of the Squier and pickups ($300) it's not bad at all. :D

System I
Quote from the manual for the System I: " The System I features a fine tuning floating bridge with two knife edge pivots, height adjustable pivot posts, roller saddles, and a snap-in torque adjustable arm. It also comes supplied with a three section screw actuated locking nut."
