So at the age of 49 I finally decided to learn how to play guitar. I bought myself an Epi acoustic for Christmas. And around Valentines day I bought a 2006 MIM Strat off of craigs list.

I don't think the guy played it much. The strings were a little rusty. He's a keyboard player. It just sat in his living room studio for 5 years. He had a big Hammond organ and Leslie speaker and a few other assorted instruments. Really nice guy.

I took it in for a setup. it needed a slight neck adjustment and fretboard oiling.

Here are the obligatory photos:

I like this forum and have been lurking for about a month. Wish me luck learning how to play this thing.

Chris

Welcome Chris :) There are plenty of us here in the same or similar situation to you, so you'll find plenty of interesting things to read about. I like it that people here are very positive in their attitudes so the debates are lively and fun!

Just thought I'd mention - I couldn't look at your pics without a plaxo account.

I don't have a style yet. But I like blues and rock mostly.

Let's try this photo thing again.

Nice Strat! I got the same one for Christmas after starting a couple years ago on a Starcaster.

Just a quick start tip.

Learn the 12 bar blues progression in the key of A. Learn the Am pentatonic and blues pentatonic scales. Find some friends and jam!

There are a lot of internet sites for free and some good ones that cost a bit to help.

Chords, scales, circle of 5ths, chord progressions etc can be found here:
http://www.all-guitar-chords.com/

Good free blues stuff
http://www.bluesrepublic.org/

Backing tracks free (for general blues backings, look under J for jam
http://www.guitarbackingtrack.com/
http://www.guitarbt.com/
http://www.jamtracks.ru/en/mpjam.html

Great basic lessons and videos
http://www.justinguitar.com/

Commercial site for lessons
http://www.jamplay.com

...don't tell anyone else here...but I also got Guitar for Dummies...that was a great help. I liked it so much I got Blues Guitar for Dummies too. 8)

Have a great time. I am 43 and have a high stress day job. I just got back from the doc today and my blood pressure was 116/65. I have not doubt that it was because of my guitar! I came home and kissed my Strat!

Welcome chris, I'm new to the forum myself, but I've been playing guitar for alot longer.

One thing I will say is you'll never stop learning guitar, and thats half the fun of it. Theres ALWAYS new things to do, whether it's a D chord, clapton's bends to the perfect pitch, blues double stops, allman brothers style major scale harmony runs up the neck, or a chromatic run in the style of dimebage darrell, there is always something to learn.

Have fun, check back in with the forum from time to time to give us updates :)

Dan

PS - Love the 3 tone burst on that strat :).

Hey, welcome to the forum. This is a great place with lots of friendly people and TONS of good advice. Like you I am starting my "guitar life" at the age of 43. Funny thing is, I started with an epi acoustic and then bought a 2008 MIN strat and a nice super champ XD amp. Not top of the line gear but I feel it is very adequate to learn on and should last me a good long while. Best of luck to you my friend.

PS..GREAT looking guitars. Wait until you discover the world of mods you can do to your strat without spending tons of money or having to be a guitar techno wiz. Pick guards, locking tuners, neck plates.....the list goes on and on and on.
