I lost the one off of my No1 White Strat changing string at a gig years ago, I never missed it. Sometimes I'll rake the springs during Third Stone From The Sun. It's the only way to sound like a spaceship landing, without throwing your guitar. I took it off my Saphire Blue Strat because the pickguard was Tortoise Shell and the back plate was White. It looked like a White peice of plastic on an otherwise elegant guitar. I left it on my Red and White Polka Dot Buddy Guy Strat because it looked good with the White Pickguard, White Back Plate, and white polka dots.

None of the above

I have one of those funky '83 Strats with no backplate and the FreeFlyte tremolo, so it's not an option.

I have some on and some off.

My 89 Am. Std. seems to have a deeper, warmer tone to it WITHOUT that blasted back plate...will probably kick butt as soon as I install my new Texas Specials......

Despite opinions to the contrary, I don't know how removing the backplate of an electric guitar can change the tone.

After hearing this rumor a few years ago, I tried it on two Strats and felt foolish twice when there was no discernable difference in the sound.

I don't see how removing the backplate could affect tone so much you could actually hear it.

The cavity is already there.

The plate can't possibly be affecting the guitars resonance.

Even acoustically, if you considered that cavity a sound hole, you're still blocking it with your body when you play. So plate or not, you've got the "soundhole" blocked.

+1

I took mine off after reading this thread but I found no difference in how I sounded.....no worries - I like experimenting and I have given it couple of weeks but it's a thumbs down from me.

"Do you have the backplate still on your Strat?"

Yes. No. Some of my strats have the backplate, some do not. It's easier to change strings (and make adjustments) if they are off.

1990/91 MIM Standard Strat, now turned into Clapton clone with blocked trem, pickups, mid-boost etc, always had the cover ON and I personally think it adds a bit more resonance to the sound, and I have never had any trouble with strings and springs (why do they need constant adjusting??) it stays ON!
