took it off. it was catching on my belt, and it was causing a hell of an echo when playing unplugged.

I just saw an Eric Johnson interview where he said taking it off increased his gain. Mine's coming off as I mess with my adjustments often.

Mine always come off as soon as I get the guitar.

BTW: Jimi and Stevie took theirs off too.

I've been playing for a few years and I have some friends who a pros. Only a couple of them take the back plate off but none of them will give me a reason as to why other that 'it's so cool'. Someone wanna offer me up a better answer? Please?

I don't know if it's so cool or not, but

String changes are much faster and easier with it off.
It changes the tone slightly.
Trem adjustments take less time..

I leave them on until I have to take them off usually. Then they usually stay that way. Just like CAFeathers said, it just makes things easier. Usually trem equipped guitars I've picked up on eBay usually don't even have them.
