I'm getting a weird crackling sound when struming. Any I ideas what it could be. It dosen't always happen, only with heavy strumming. It's not the amp. Doesn't happen with my other 62 re-issue.

I have a 62 MIJ Re-Issue all original.

Do pick-ups go bad?

If I do replace, are vintage noiseless better than Custom Shop Texas Specials?

It could be that the higher output signal produced by all the strings vibrating at once is overloading some component in the audio chain. Try turning down the volume on your guitar a little and see if the crackling is still there. If it is then turn the volume as low as it will go and you can still hear it. If there is still crackling at the low volume, you could have a loose wire somewhere in your guitar that only vibrates when your guitar resonates a lot when you hit a chord. If you feel safe doing it, you could take the pickguard off and see if you can see any loose wires inside.

It's static electricity.

Try this: plug the guitar in and rub your fingers back and forth across the pickguard below the PUs. Hear the crackle? Static. Not all guitars do it, but some do it very badly indeed.

Fear not - there is a CHEAP fix.

You need to cover the inside of the guard with cooking foil. This has the added benefit of making the guitar less susceptible to radio interference. You'll need to remove the guard and strip all the hardware from it. I usually attach the foil with a permanent spray mount type adhesive - spray the foil NOT the guard unless you want to have the front of the guard covered in sticky overspray. Let the spray become tacky, then press the guard onto the foil. Let it dry, then cut away the excess foil, re-load the guard and replace.

Do the rub test - silence.

It's not as good as the 'guitarnuts - how to silence the beast' treatment, but much easier, and completely effective for static problems.

:D

Perfectly reasonable guess. I've had this issue on a couple of Strats and a Tele (and a Washburn A15 - effectively a strat with an unusual body and set neck).

Definately static from the pick guard.

I have several guitars that do that.

I have not had time to fix it, I just try to not touch the pickguard...

good luck

Sounds like static in the pickguard.
I've had the same problem on Strat and Tele.
Here's a quick non-invasive fix.

Loosen the strings and rub the pickguard with a "dryer sheet fabric softener".
Downy or some other brand.
This will remove the static charge as it does when used drying clothes.
Try it! It does work. I keep one in my case.

CORRECTION:

It's the "BOUNCE" dryer sheets that I use.
I guess anykind may work to eliminate the static charge on your pickguard.
