Well Kirk, you were correct on the pickup height being height...set them to the spec in the manual and that helped some, the balance between each pickup was way off. I meant to set them back some time ago to the book, but always seem to get distracted when I pick up the guitar and go off on a tangent playing.

The guitar is still too bright at high volume so I think I need to get a amp that doesn't break up as soon. If anyone has a suggestion for an amp that works well with bright guitars I am all ears.

I think I could compensate in other ways, changing to a rosewood fingerboard, changing pu's, etc. But I need a new amp anyway and would love to find one that would work with this guitar at higher volume...the guitar sounds really good at low volume so my goal is to get the same sound cranked. I guess everybody wants this too.

I am trying to resist relying on someone else setting up my guitar...but that is not a bad suggestion. I am getting closer. Thanks everyone.
Just a quick question before you get another amp.Are you using the tone pots to help roll off some treble when you play?One common mistake is to keep them at 10 all the time.If you are playing with overdrive or distortion this can sound icepicky and unpleasant.Same goes for amp settings.I play clean with the tone pots at 8-10 and od at 5-7.Just a suggestion.BTW changing to a rosewood neck wont make much if any difference in the brightness.

Yes, I usually turn the pots down but only when playing in a band, but thanks for the suggestion. I'm pretty sure it's down to either the amp and/or the pu's. I have tweaked my amp quite a bit and no luck. Have tried noiseless pu's when I got the guitar and it was still pretty bright although these pu's are probably too. I think it is just a bright guitar, which I may turn out to like with the right combination of amp and/or pu. Right now it has more of a country sound IMHO. I want to see if I can find an amp which works...if not i will try some single coil humbuckers.

It sounds like maybe you need an amp that has some good bottom end to compensate for the brightness.Something with 6l6s or 6v6 tubes might help.Another option would be to swap out the pickups like you said.I like Texas Specials myself,really good bass and not as sparkly on the high end ,but it took me a while to find the right combination that works.Good luck and let us know how it turns out.

What type of amp are you using? Is it solid state or tube? You'll need an amp with a twelve inch speaker to get any real bottom end. Tube amps are usually warmer. Humbuckers will be warmer than single coils of course. EQ pedals work. Glad to hear your getting closer to the sound. You're on the right track.

Edit::
Oops. Was on my phone for that post. Didn't read far enough back in the thread. That Vox you have is no slouch. Still it isn't a pure tube amp. It's a modeling amp. There are people who really like this amp. That doesn't mean you have to. If you do go amp shopping, look for all tube amps. That way you can experiment with tubes and speakers. Maybe the modeling amps just aren't your thing. You should be able to trade that for a nice tube amp.

What Capacitor do you have in the guitar. Cap effects how bright guitar is.

I was just thinking the same thing. A cap change can do wonders. Good point.

Just take it in for a complete setup i think.
Yep , strats are finicky little buggers when it comes to setting it up.Get the strings you want and have a tech set it up for you .

+1. Get a pro set up. The greatest guitar will play/ sound like rubbish if its not set up properly.
