Most of you know me. What have you done? Sell your no. 1 for rent or hope for the better? Stuck in a moment here.

Never sell #1. I am sure you can get the scratch some other way as I can guarantee you will regret it.

I would get evicted and live in my car before I sold my #1. Rent is going to come again next month, and if you are thinking of selling your guitar now, than what will you sell next month? Keep the git, pack up your stuff and and find a friend of family member to crash with. If you have kids and/or a wife living with you, than sell it. If its just you, tough it out. Things will get better.

It depends on what your priorities are.
Tough times make tough choices.
I just know how it is with a family, but I regret selling every guitar or amp I sold in the past.

It depends on who is affected by your decision. Me, I'd sell the lot to keep my roof, I've 3 kids, my options are not options at all.

If your on your own and the chances are good that next month you'll be in the clear either way. Hold em off on the rent. No point having a guitar if you have to sleep on a park bench in the rain. That said, if you cant see yourself getting clear for the forseeable future you may as well abandon the place. Let the landlord find another tennant and you move on to hopefully greener pastures.

I've sold guitars and amps to pay bills too. It's so hard to replace the gear you sell. You never get the coin you want for your gear when you have to sell it either. You buy a guitar for $500, have to sell it later to pay a bill and get $300 for it, then it costs $700 to repace it cause the price goes up in the meantime, or because it's a desireable guitar.

JnastyNE is a wise man. This is exactly the correct answer.

And if you have to sell it, there are lots of "other" number 1's out there. You are in a VERY long line that have done so.

It's been a rough few weeks. I've been unemployed since Oct. 09. I'm between unemployment claims. I haven't seen a check for almost a month. My wife works. I do have kids, and dogs. I called my landlord and told him I couldn't pay rent in full. He's working with me. The balance is due within the week.

I've sold some gear lately. It's stuff I wasn't using. Every time I mention selling my Strat my wife says no. She won't be a part of that. I know I would deeply regret the decision if I sold.

I was feeling particularly down when I wrote this last night. Things will work out. I've sold gear in the past and regretted it. I'm not going to make that mistake again. Thanks for your thoughts everybody.

Well the mail just came. They approved my new claim and I should be seeing funds within a couple weeks. The bills will have to wait. Rent will get paid. The bills will always be there. Always. If I sell my guitar it will be gone forever. There's no telling when I'd have the means to replace it. I've waited too many years for this guitar. I've always had to settle for less. Keeping the guitar is the right choice for me right now. If it came right down to where it was my family's welfare or the guitar, then yes, I'd sell. While there's still a gleam of hope that I'll weather this storm, I'm keeping it. Thanks again for the replies.

Ive sold two guitars in my time for that reason, and I regret it sorely. You are lucky your wife knows how much you love your guitar and understands. She may realise that if you do sell it, that may get you down a little.

Tell you what mate- there are heaps of people in your situation. The time is nigh to up-skill if you can. Unemployment benefits in NZ are lowert than Student benefits for good reason- if thats the same in your area, maybe you could look into that- by the time you finish, the whole crisis with unemployment will look better, and your skills & knowlege will be better for it.

Just an idea :)

I have never sold a guitar to pay bills. I have sold them for extra money. I have traded them for "better" guitars. I have pawned one or two and have lost one (thanks dear) because it was not retrieved in time.

If it came down to dire needs, I would sell #2 and try to hold on to #1 as long as I could. However, these are tough times and you will need to do what you need to do. I hope things work out for the best.

Dodged a bullet.
I'm glad to hear things are getting somewhat better for you.
I am very happy to hear you didn't have to sell your #1.

I hope things get even better for you sir. Good Luck
