I like a hss configuration so i would chose the special cause i love the pucnch of the humbucker and a humbucker is great to nail some maiden leads. But if i were you id go play eac and just get the feel of each. :D :D :D :D :D

Get the Blackmore. None of them are going to achieve the sound you want by themselves.

Technically the Hwy 1s are MIM too.

I've heard Fender say that "85%" of the Highway 1 is American made. Whatever that means?

I honestly believe that said just to make us feel better. North or South doesn't matter to me. I like them all!

Wow, fenderstrat1963, and guitslinger, coming from you two, those are real compliments! I was shootin' for humor with hamster, but i'm gonna have to with angel. one day at the madison wi guitar center, i had my choice of acoustic electric narrowed down to a takamine eg530sc. Well, they had three of em' so i started playing each a bit, and then switching to another. It didn't take long at all before "the one" was an easy choice, so i immediately walked her out of the acoustic guitar room, paid for her. What an awesome guitar for only $500.

Mate, I'm nothing special - I just like hanging out here where there are people who like guitar music instead of just listening to the top 40.

That sounds like a really good deal on the Takamine by the way - it retails for A$899 where I live!

I'm in Brisbane - half way up (or down) the East coast of Australia. Allan's Music here (they're Oz-wide as far as I know) say they'll refund 110% of the difference if you can find a cheaper advertised price. Their Christmas sale had some good prices - that's when I bought

Some current examples:
Fender American Standard Strat 3 Colour Sunburst A$2,399:

Fender Highway One Strat 3 Colour Sunburst A$1,499:

Dave,

Here is my thoughts on this question. Get any of those guitars. Put in a Dimarzio Super Distortion or Seymore Duncan Pearly Gates in the bridge position and Texas Specials in the neck and middles positions and you will have one adbay assay (pig latin for BA) guitar for the music you want to play. The American Special is already more than half way there, just add the upgrade humbucker in the bridge.

I prefer the Highway 1 and American Special Stratocasters for Metal, Rock, and Thrash music; however, I always suggst playing as many models in the store and see which one you prefer. And to this country of origin nonsense discussed here, well there is nothing wrong with MIM, MIJ/CIJ, MIA, CII, CIC, MIK/CIK guitars. And I know what pieces on my guitar were made where, however, my Highway 1 is stamped Made in USA. My Squier CV 60 is stamped Crafted in China and it is an awesome guitar too, a total tone monster. So who really cares where it is made?

Of course these are my opinions and my Highway 1 sounds awesome with the Dimarzio Super Distortion and the stock Alnico III's in the neck and middle positions. I am also saving for an American Special as my next guitar purchace. I absolutely fell in love with the tone (SSS model not the HSS model) when I played them. IMO,the humbucker in the HSS will need to be replaced, it is too weak for Metal. Since I already have one HSS Stratocaster I will be buying a SSS American Special in the (hopefully) near future.
